Battle of Aspern-Essling - 21st-22nd May, 1809
« on: October 08, 2016, 02:32:03 PM »
Hi folks,

Please see below the link to our club website where we have produced the cards, briefings and rosters for the Battle of Aspern-Essling.

https://oldmeldrumwargamesgroup.com/battle-of-aspern-essling-21st-22nd-may-1809/

The cards are 80mm x 60mm (using A4 paper size) and the map in the scenario notes is 8ft x 5ft using a 3" = 1BW scale (32 x 20BW)

As always any and all comments welcome.

Ross,

Ross,
This may seem redundant to some extent but is good form.

Suggest you include a scale table with the scenarios to reflect the your above and my below:

Scales    3" = 120 Yards  Map (1 Square is 12”)
Under Strength         Normal Strength           Over Strength
Infantry Men   100                         200-750                              1000
Artillery guns    2                            4-6                                       8
Cavalry Men   100                         200-750                              1000
Stand = Regiment;   One Player turn 15 minutes

Thank you Oldmeldrum Wargames Group for the effort put into these productions. They make reproducing a large (and very interesting) battle doable. More please.

Hallarno,

Thanks, great to see the scenarios being used!

Currently on a bit of a hiatus from scenario writing at the moment (having been kept busy with work and life in general since the New Year). Hoping to get Leipzig out there over the next month or so.

Best regards,

Ross

Great effort! Sincere thanks. My buddy and I were just starting to put this together when you posted it. Perfectly timed. Our only question is the MO dice for day two at six. Seems like a lot. Is there a reason you went to six? Jim

Jim,

Thanks for the comment. The reason that I have allocated both sides 6MO dice is due to the army sizes exceeding 600pts. When writing my scenarios I generally give 1MO dice per 100pts.

For the first day I limited the Austrian player to 4 dice as, with the benefit of the "gods eye view" and knowledge of the whole situation, it would be far too easy for them to crush the comparatively small French force in front of them.

Obviously if you play the scenario through and you feel 6MO is too much then let me know as it's always good to get feedback.

IMO you want the activations at least half the turns to be restrictive. Our group has lots of experience and are significantly better at the dice management than when they started. They know what their priorities are and  about what to expect from. The dice. We see more activations by command than we did at the start. So I think that the real answer will very from group to group.

Ross,

We played the first day of Aspern-Essling with your excellent scenario and cards. I sent the cards off to an office supply store and had them laminated. Turned out excellent. Austrians captured Aspern. Never really threatened Essling. Going to play the second day in a couple weeks. Sincere thanks for the excellent materials.

Another picture. Austrian IV Corps advancing on Essling. Two Young Guard Bdes repulsed them in Essling.

Napoleon and his immediate Staff between Aspern and Essling very near the front after activating by command six units to straighten the line before the Austrians struck Essling and the right late in the day.
