Drones
« on: July 07, 2016, 04:07:15 PM »
Tried playing with Drones last night and found them to be particularly ineffective so I guess we may be doing something wrong.
When the drone is launched it can be countered by a butterfinger - the butterfinger can be reused as soon as it is reset while the drone is a one shot weapon.
If enough drones are launched to overcome the defenses they can be fired at by Sparrow or any beam weapon or certain broadcasts. I appreciate that there is a 50% chance of hitting it so two weapons will be required, but these are weapons which are normally carried anyway for use against ships.
Then you have to pay for the drone again at the start of the next scenario and at $4 to $10 each, this is a big chunk out of any bounty, particularly as no other weapon or defense system needs to be paid for again. We all thought that they were much too expensive.
Please tell us if we are misinterpreting the rules.

No, you've got the rules correct.  There was a lot of discussion about this in the final days of the play testing.  I was sort of the opinion - like you - that they were too expensive, but a number of playtesters convinced me otherwise.  Their argument was that IF the drone survives, its effect is often quite severe. (One of the British playtest groups had a player who loaded up on drones and launched them en masse.)

Two things came out of those play tests:  1) that drones work better in larger numbers.  and  2) that they're best used in conjunction with certain other weapons, such as a broadcast that can shut down other sorts of defenses or weapons.

But of course if your group really likes the idea of drones, but - given the number of players and the scenarios you play - they seem too expensive, then just adjust their price down by as much  as 50% and see what happens.  It won't break the game, although it might have some weird effects.

One of the nice things about Freejumper, though, is that "weird effects" are not necessarily bad.

PS - don't forget the importance of timing.  You want to launch drones relatively late in the turn, so that your enemy has the fewest remaining online weapons and the fewest remaining opportunities to shoot them down or thwart them, before the Drone Step arrives.
