Ship architecture

With regards to the various classes of ships is there a general rule of thumb as to how big they are in relation to one another? I don't want to stiffle creativity but I personally would find it easier to choose an appropriate model ship size if I had a rough idea. Can I take hull size as an approximation? Was there an archytype in mind when devising the class names? A basic idea would help me choose models. I'm following Seret's idea of unbalanced vessels as a basic 'club/beginner' set - but different ships as we go to the same game club ;-)

Yes, Hull size is essentially the ship's overall size and basic mass.
