Rommel is Coming This Year!
« on: March 14, 2017, 08:13:22 AM »
Some of you may have noticed that Webmeister Rusti has created a new "Rommel" tab on the HONOUR "Downloads" page. There you can find some samples / teasers from the upcoming game book.

Rommel is right on schedule.  I'd love to be able to say that it will launch on 1 September, the anniversay of the war's start, but I've been in the publishing business long enough to know that there's no way to guarantee a specific date, especially when trying to coordinate shipping overseas, and launching on multiple continents simultaneously.  So I'm still going to say just...  "Late Summer."

Please don't email me to ask a million questions about specific game mechanics! I don't want to be rude, but there's no way I'd have the time to answer all of those questions over and over again.  Just bear the following in mind:

1. Like all HONOUR games, the basing is totally flexible and you can use any size/scale figures.

2. Yes, there is a fictional scenario generator and army lists for all the major European powers for all periods of the war (Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Soviets, US.)

3. Yes, the game supports historical scenario design (see the example of Deir-el-Tarfa, taken from the Appendix and now a free download.)

I will soon be doing a "How to play Rommel" podcast which I'll send out to everybody on my emailing list (which is everybody who has ever purchased from my online store, unless you told me to leave you alone!)

For more details and for the game's intent and perspective, refer to the most recent Podcast #9:

best,
Sam

Thanks for the downloads Sam. It is really good to get an idea of army size and force composition at an early stage, so I can add the missing elements to my forces - mainly towed artillery.
As usual the rules look clear and easy to follow, lots of examples are good. One plea is to have decent index either in the rules or online.
Good luck and enjoy all that spring weather you are getting in NE USA!

I always put the index on the last page.

Great new podcast on how to play plus sections of the rules, QRS etc in the down loads.

Many thanks Sam.  :)

Starting to prepare scenery tiles etc. Could you confirm any types I've missed please and a couple of details? (from the QRS)

Urban
Woods - any different types/density?
Mountain
Bocage
Open
Soft ground - presumably anything from Marsh to soft sand?
Beach
Non-open - general farm land?

Any others?

Many thanks

Nick

I have decided to collect a force in 3mm. I realise that scale does not matter but what about base size. It would appear that a rectangular base is required? Would 5cm by 2.5cm work (looking at the same unit 'cards'.

I imagine base size isn't too important, as long as you can comfortably fit up to three units in your squares!

Apparently I can field an entire Soviet mechanized corps in a mid-war game, so I'm excited.

All correct except the last. There's just "Open" for farmland and rolling hills.

As per the podcast, any base sizes and shapes are fine. The game plays on squares - of whatever size you choose.

This is all excellent news, looking good!

I haven't been this excited for something new since Blucher...

Any ideas yet on what the model if going to be for official army cards? Print on Demand or boxed sets, both?

Speaking of Blucher, a Cigarbox battles style Rommel map or two inc some scenery you can drop into squares would be pretty cool...

None.  Just a DYI template that you can fill-in, yourself. If you don't like using the cards, you can use a roster (a sample will be provided.)

The Sheffield playtest group doesn't use either because they don't like the way paper looks on the table. So they just put the miniatures bases on the table and add little "hit markers" and just remember the values.

Rommel can go from "true/pure miniatures" like the Sheffield guys do, to "near-boardgame" by just using paper alone and no figures at all.

Yeah, I'm partnered with Cigar Box agan for this project.  Many photos of the table in the book use their 4" and 6" square mats.

It sounds like an interesting and appealing set of rules.  I wonder if there are any pictures or videos of them in action from the play testing.  At this scale based miniatures would effectively be tokens, even more so than in in your other set of rules with (I imagine) one AFV or 4-6 infantry representing a whole company, so it would be nice to see what these numbers look like in action in an actual Rommel battle.  I am thinking of using 10mm figures on 100mm terrain squares, therefore I am guessing a table size of about 4ft x 3ft would be about right, does this sound feasible?

here's a few pics of one of the Sheffield playtests...for 6mm I use a 4 " grid...each square is a kilometre so lots of interesting Historical scenario's can easily be set up...10mm and 15mm will work fine...probably just have a 6" grid...

As Sam says I use hit markers and everything works a treat.

Arnhem?

Thanks for posting these, they look great.  I have just found them and similar on the Honour FB page, I should have looked more diligently before. I am wavering between scales as I am pretty space restricted but inclined towards 10mm as I already have some figures and could use a pile of plastic AFVs and artillery  from the Tide of Iron and Memoir '44 board games.  Having said that Rommel looks as though it is quite economical in terms of miniatures particularly in smaller scales.  Possibly thinking of 10mm for Europe and 6mm or even 2/3mm for desert scenarios, where the spaces are more open.

Do rivers and roads have effects or functions in the rules?  No need to give details of their effects if any, but i would like to know if it is necessary to make such tiles  for anything other than aesthetic value, as I integrate rivers and roads together with other features such as bridges in terrain tiles rather than have them as separate overlays.

Although there is a limit of 3 units in a square, when combat occurs do the opponents units also move into the square resulting in more than 3 units in a square, albeit on a temporary basis?
