Avant-garde basing & effectiveness
« on: July 28, 2017, 03:42:30 AM »
Hi!
I am starting to base my 6mm Austrians as divisions on the 75mm Sally4th bases. I am taken with the idea of the avant-garde formation but it is only brigade strength.
I had the idea of halving the quantity of figures I would use for the divisional bases and halving the stats also.
Has anyone done this or tried it?
How effective would it be on the table -top?

It would be extremely ineffective.
Almost to the point of being useless.

Mike,
Yes I assumed it would be less effective in the sense of less elan overall.
Perhaps it could be recompensed by having a greater movement allowance, exposing and engaging the enemy forces.
I suspect it would be better used in the Scharnhorst campaign.

I don t really follow what you are trying to do or what size battles you are trying to fight and what period.
The units are based on numbers of men, not brigades or divisions. It does work out to be brigade size for most units.

If you look under scenarios. You will find the Austrians in the Army of Bohemia. Several corps have advance guard

Mike,
Thanks'
My aim is to use each base/unit as a division as set out on pages 11 & 79. It better reflects what I want to achieve game wise. I had a lot of games at divisional level and under with 'To the Sound of the Guns' and similar and wanted to try larger armies in this system.
Each base will have 4 individual units, whether horse, foot etc. to reflect regiments to give it that army feel. That is why the avant-garde unit is under strength and I wanted to reflect that visually.
I'll checkout the scenarios.

Thank you
