They do look good at 2 ranks per base and those are nice looking figs. I especially like it if using marching poses. I am using 6 figs to a base for the marching poses.  But when having 2 bases deep that gives 4 ranks, which was not that typical for a unit to my understanding. So, for my Federals I have been going with a single rank - as you cans see below.

There are more shots and comments here: http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2013/08/12/federal-forces-finally-off-the-painting-table/, as I have just started to finish the first of my Federal forces.

I will say this also does reduce the number of figs to paint which is a bonus for me. :)

They're looking good! I don't know why I am increasing my painting load but I just like the look. After looking at yours, sparse isn't all that bad but I'm stuck now. My friend Josh will skewer me if I told him we were re-basing...again!  :-X

The single rank basing looks good for ACW. Nice idea and less painting!

I having been aiming to get forces done to play the game when it arrives.

So today I have completed enough of a Federal force to play. I should be set for when the game hits my desk. If the post man takes a while I may get even more done. Below is my 'starter' group for the Union forces to rival the confederates.

More details pictures here: http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2013/08/20/federal-force-recruited-just-in-time/

Very nice.

Now you can start on some extra infantry command stands.  Within a few campaign games you will have a lot more (but smaller) units.  You will probably want a command stand for each unit (since lots of flags always looks good).  So, quick - get another 5 command stands done.

Oh, and don't forget more artillery.  The US can get heaps of guns by the end of the campaign.  And they can be all sorts of types.

And of course you will want some coloured regiments.  You will really want them when they start to arrive mid-campaign: big eager regiments are great attacking later in the campaign...

So dont stop, and keep showing us your progress...

More federal recruits leave the painting table and are ready to march onto the gaming table. You can see more info here: http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2013/09/07/more-federal-troops-ready/ A sample shot of a couple of the units is below:

Another 37 bases of Federals off the painting table - and below are colored troops for the late war battles :

One day I'm going to get to play the game...

I'm using the same bases I use for RF&F (using 15mm figures), i.e. 3 inf. on a 30x15mm base, 2 cavalry on a 30x30mm and one gun with three crew on a 30x40mm. I find this works really well on a 6'x4' table. Hoping to get some photos up soon.

My painting continues - with another 30 bases of reb's...

I blame Sam for getting me into the aspect of painting ACW figs. I now have way more troops than I need for this game on my own but I'm planning on keeping going for a while longer. I am starting to have visions of hosting a Longstreet demo game in one of the local con's now...:(

You can't have too many, especially if you want to host multiplayer games. I particularly like the colour scheme you've adopted for your Confederate troops. Often figure photos seem to show far too much red in a Confederate unit - shirts, blankets etc., and I imagine that their appearance was a lot more sober than that.

Thanks for the comments. Personally, I find the union forces are worse for a lack of colour (or color) than the rebels.

The black for straps, packs and pouches with the dark blue jackets in 10mm have very little separation to the eye - the blanket roll can be the only highlight and really I guess should not be a bright shade. I have cheated on mine and often have a non black backpack/pouches.

You can always throw in some zouaves for colour. The Union zouave brigade was created in 1864, consisting of 44th NY in dark blue, including the kepi, but with red shirts, 140th NYV, again in dark blue but with red fez and large red tombeaux on the jacket, and 146th NYV in sky blue with yellow trim and red fezzes. Pendraken produce some very nice 10mm zouave figures.
