Lethal Volleys, basing and 6mm

I am about to paint up my Imperialists in 6mm but I am not sure if I should base them for the French system (3 ranks of 8) or the Dutch system (2 ranks of 12). In Maurice the difference if you have the Lethal Volleys advantage or not.

I am conflicted in my reading as some sources indicate even the French had moved to this system by the end of the period so as the Imperialists are with the Allies do people think they should be based for better fire or not?

I am tempted to base them different anyways as it makes it easy to know which side is which.

General Hans von Zieten:
in Maurice shooting and combat is by base not by figure , so really just do what you like the look of , or whatever was done historically . i suppose you could do a house rule that only units with 3 ranks of soldiers can use Lethal Volleys

Ray29:
Hi Tod,
My 6mm Austrians are in three ranks of eight, whilst my Prussians are in two ranks of 12.  Seems to work ok and looks good to boot.

Cheers

Just to be devils advocate - are you not doing the same thing by two mechanisms. I would have thought Dutch School would be represented by those troops with the option of column or line... and the French System being represented by the 'En Mass' National Advantage.

... unless of course you wanted an individual base representation for troop distinction etc. ???

It is troop distinction I liked - I use En Masse for the French and Lethal Volleys for the Dutch school. The question for me is if the Imperialists were using French or Dutch style tactics. My guess is that they used French style early in the period and Dutch style late but it is a guess.

I'll have to read up again on the column or line option - I think I missed that in the rules.
