Title: "Battle in the Box" or "Travel boardgame" variant
Post by: Bayernkini on September 04, 2017, 09:20:34 AM
Because of my use of printable terrainfiles, it was a small step, to scale down all files and markers, to make a "traveller" version,
also usable, for fast setups to test new scenarios :)

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/gH7ZlbhWG5uCZNYAc5HtTIjZU4iZsTRM13wbP-KAssY1KA7Fv6oz970c99KgUgJPyeTos63_yEgPKhD93g5i04ql1Uy3b4Lcv273qeTyEx5yJgVJibfC-a2wfbYs5zzR6qaxg6qPPUKzOqgSVSdJl_B4vCheSFllEIKkTsJjyNxVMzjoOT16b_t4Xxa5QH6W_JtOQRBHyLmfrtmwNPe0V-M-OvYzF-r6danF_PI1Fuwi1RWLU17A0bph5mLea6gQHTTdPqIN9DquSJp7AJrM8DT7N0sp613o1AZoyEoeqnUxH1wRBb8NuGjBRdOD9i-x4nB21AQNSok2L4v3tc2xN1a29s243w-KksGO1mK04C8iKCVDNqcdecj0-ikZGmjAN0RcfJbBFejysNcOFlwnqdMfSo8KU8XRgU3Fjk-Pe3pYF3gDkDGUrJyMQYWtgBCQPXNmrdRCu2SEylN3bLVHHR9fYKBh054bx_gJLCyoBMoHxQySEKsZVRbW00R-XGsr_G-GCjsrvEDP2AE3NrkfahMr2db1spboM7-9SSSeGRx8DWU4Upf8jc4DnntfIJHi4WnLjXHEi_PRE8htTX3tpS_RpDi8LNITWAKdP_w76qxSRFGyaxd_lSohpL4MFj_AxnMbZSiJBO-SYYxDA96alsa-t5kjIa3JPM_tJbT2QqDzGA=w1074-h604-no)

I scaled down my terrain files to a 70mm size square, which is suitable to play a complete 12x8 square map on my standard dining room table.
The hills are 3D-made and also stickered with a printed suitable terrain file ;)

I revised the graphics of the unit card templates a little bit, the size of the unit markers are 35x20mm. The inner part (with unit type symbol) is still large enough, to place a single tank or artillery with crew or a couple of Infantry miniatures in 6mm scale, if i want add such miniatures later.

It looks good, where dis you get the images on your urban top down tiles?

The town building and botany graphics are free stuff for the "Fractal Mapper" Map editor

Well, just creating more terrain tiles, to use/play the
"Juno Beach" scenario

I used for the "urban" squares in front/beach line "bunker" models/graphics instead town buildings.
And i can decide to use flat bunker "marker" if i play with flat counters/cards, or i use 3D models, if i replace the unit cards with 6mm miniatures ;)

Ok, because of other players ideas here, i go on, to create combined printed tiles with 3D buildings/terrain.

So here my first town template. A printed floor/street tile with 3d buildings.
Some (smaller buildings) are only placed direct on the tile, while i create some "larger" bases to arrange larger buildings (church e.g.)
in groups and/or with botany (trees, hedges).
So you can also remove single or group bases, to place units on the tile.

Ok, creating a european fields map :)

Starting situation is  a digital battlemat templage in 6mm scale (180cm x 120cm)
which i ordered here (another scales and grounds are available and you can always as Ivan the designer, for specials).

http://wars175x.narod.ru/wargameprint/battlemats/dz054.html

and i added myself a square grid in a graphical program (but you can order for a few € more the mat file with square/hex in any size)
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ISJAGxlOQfRPurl6c5Drwo7eaBSBLA5XU43aXjfe1I9t90Ra_l_0X2FIt-P5BkXhWV4tWqWYehBQwnK5npoUeRZRt5ahK9xvFK0ecIXudDuBskJp0fC28aI7jJThGhobn5bsanBRYxtFtMl6lnkxYeL5P2aJYoTkQCGIgD1ItpRMnLuv2xwDDUCF4adBodKfDWOGN8ocgHmUgA9VE8RxUhRJ79E21FEQVVJZEAOIpBCNINfYW1tGomUXJAPVoIHZGlhnXcdsFhiUeU1k8CJ7jyFuw-01QKbc8rAztmwTqQ1iAekQr6RUOkqVqrP0H4zvPhE74hzcEt3KQA3dj3nNGUcb8_DACtIHuADy1qfwiPfYGVtYNdndK7uwzSfDMz7tafyEb75uAR-298Em1-_Gg-XX5zNzYziTv54ONnkJPqHHIN6BCdwShCoTzxaGepOlOWXH6EpmMPz_HuWUHXWnqlFq-xQXECA3e4VlkWMj931OzSILEda9r2wyjXqmQaOGGJWOvtXVhOjKC1-m8h0NSdj0yOMak2kw-NaO6EP47gAQA5cI3Tnypk7d5atdqttk3MOQ6AkFi21Nxv646U9TC9nFLl6pMEutn7EMswk5iA=w907-h604-no)

Then i "cut out" the squares digital and printed it in 50% scale (because the original size is 6mm).
I glue the printed tiles on PVC-bases (Foretex or any other name in english), which is 3mm thick and you can cut it easily with an normal
knife DIY-cutter.
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/kLQ1e7DcNqFKfr2qzMVteUm6FVg7VPfYcGVuEX9iKQPN-9KMUhFNQb4IXgRXa_W_YQpz2VU1hmPqX29eyDpAJUCPIcU_HlC4EFadq-P7M0oWliGrPkxN6UDMpGgh1wxmrP_nXaH-Wx_V5k0_-q4BLvE3YhL4RlNd667olTde_x7_XvqA7R5VGph5ay2tuEBqkGPTyVUAzs8d-LFAC2n_sgiAiqRjWAbMu7DEbbCIuxWKQQk2mI9cUupgAVYV65sisM2XDQjF2-PZsJHi1cyrIBuOoP9LCF0P4qiTyxT_3hnL2KCozGboSGlnyRAQex2NzKSHzI3mIO19DQHaq43V6sG4BPzCYla5lpCKzCvanzhx3JqmS1EtF6dZQwTRISySNvSQyXjaFdnU6foBug1o9Lg9kxWepviTEUFxFKgwwWZuGYoeBjxmtosNRy6ohuqq2ZoCRInMTEtMzKWg2Rv2ReENUnNCzUro5W_TdeObm_JSighVR5Ljgl0y1SBNeSK_zRseM9gnbWyhs02Bx_XoedZ6tmiFsTyZSX-mckO7-1yPKkI0wwmKFwltSl7iH_AFre_IDhg4e0FaRW9eSGNsZnx3MAHchyQfTad6tLqlSw=w1074-h604-no)

This PVC plates are available in different sizes and colors, as you can see my examples in green, black, white.
And i use one of these PVC plates as frame for my 3mm "boardgame" variant.
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/w9HUK2x5lhEmWOgemmHEEFtP3ytT8GS6RJXUyp0Lc5ztTBlUn59-Dr_kUlAX8vYUiafLRwQajCxBhTM8dAnUTu-h18mFfg6-XR2nWZkrWAMHbfCyL3AhlL_1kGyam3EVMXvYDdUBD329JFXXZcj69uDYFZ4MH-u2rFZlrMohDewb3JHGyhJoyenjzGJxryhghLMIYHV2eiS5ZVl6SC7p21Og0Lkoy9JPWmjzwCuubAYaOUWIaujkaK_pULhmaTYyV2_IXbUo_lXLN4zWyTMXylu47Tv5fei7GP116AMX2SZQasIbWfbZFUMYXYLdf2xTvq7Uh8zjfVcUPkJEbuyeAIjLv4pqs86s-XG1of1UKLztHNsWG-SsCYtFSjhfctijJ3bMEI-IeKU68gfifU6P7bAV16ZcYJj-xXfBp8zqMns1OTLVOGCPQGtAHHN5yLwhcIExH0qRH11o_7-NT_OoqsF1vsgzzQ90QmJA-KZytTlsu0A1Kf-L6c4tu2tmVUK1TaKg1hKSiZaAnoeZQGPEtF8aqdwHLl1zinGhIEbY-oTYEeFouGPxsnDj1obxEmbEwWsTVJehu2UtV2gHOOIfspKOYDrfoTPzwL3l-DGHDQ=w1074-h604-no)

So i wil use the tiles in this size with a mix of printed and 3D buildings/terrain, as you can see here in a first setup example ;)

You can also send the mat template to a online copy/poster shop, to print out the complete mat in one or you can send it to a mat-manufacturer, to print out the file as ready mat.
Ivan is the mat designer of
http://www.tinywargames.co.uk/
so you can also send your files direct to those manufacturer and get you own mat in any execution (cloth, rubber, e.g.) if you want.

The combination of the nicely detailed map sheet and the 3d scenery works really well. Really nice looking battle table.

Agree, in 6mm - 3mm a combination of printed tiles/complete maps and 3D terrain looks good :)
Here a first template of another digital mat template, wich i will use for the "Juno Beach" scenario.
I have also revised it myself (adding a grid again).
And as you can see, i use it with 14x8 squares, so i am more flexible, which exact squares/area i use to play.

The "fields/soft ground" and the "town" squares i dont let print direkt, for those squares i will use 3D buildings and additional bases with fields, so the printed mat/map will look like this, 14x8 squares or 105x60cm (in 3mm scale).

Ok, here a small update:
Changed the general buildings bases to 1" (and multiple) squares, e.g.
1x1, 2x1, 4x4 inch, so i am more flexible to use it on different maps/mats.

Further here a few single "fields" tiles, which i use as "Soft Ground" e.g., and i have it a little bit revised with terrain foliage, so the paper printed tiles looks a little bit better ;)

Ok, the "Urban" sections for my planned "Juno Beach" are nearly finished.

For the "front" urban squares i use a mix of houses and bunkers. For the rearward villages i need still a few last building "modules"
as you can see on the modules with the brown primed houses.

Furthermore i have now ordered a complete printed mat (as you can see on the templates above), which i will use next on CONīs,
to show/promote the rules with the "Juno Beach" scenario.
If i get the mat next days, a setup picture follows.
Also the ordered 3mm miniatures should arrive next, then i will see, how i base it useful for the "Rommel" rules and those size of the squares.

Today my 3mm miniatures arrived, but for those two testpics i painted only the LCVPīs.

My printed testsection shows exact the square size of my ordered complete battlemat,
next days they should arrive also ;)
I am still thinking about, hot to make "prepared" markers, in those scale my example with selfmade wire is still relative big,
but i didnīt got it smaller manual.

Take a look at the Irregular Miniatures 2mm scenery range. They have tank obstacles, trench lines, bunkers etc available that will work well with the 3mm figures.

Finished the first 2 german battlegroups, 716. and 352. Infantry Division.

As you can see, i use two-piece bases,
a ground base with the unit values, the ground base (25x25mm) is made of ferro-foil and
a on top a unit base, wich is made of magnetic bases (25x20mm).

So i simple switch the top base 90 degree for each hit and i can use the unit bases also for other ground bases/ game rules ;)

To prevent involuntary shifting of the OPīs dice because of the heat of battle, i using magnetic OPs boards.

The paper printed original OPs chart is on a DIN A4 selfglued magnetic foil, which i glued on cardboard, because itīs more stable then, see this example (didnt find the right english name).

https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B01LB0I9G4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Ad instead of dice (need still dice for rolling the number of new OPs markers), i use selfmade magnetic markers. Printed round nation marker, glued on 1cent pieces, and on the backside of the cent is a small and flat magnetic slice.

Additional i use a smaller variant for players hand, only with the battle tactics, so the players can easily take the OPs marker from the original OPīs sheet to choose hidden the desired tactics. After reveal the players tactics, the markers are moved then from the handcard to the corresponding area on the original OPs chart.

As i said already, i let it print 14x8 squares, so i can use it for "beach" scenarios with the beach sections or
as "inland" scenarios without the beach sections ;)

Not so incredible as i saw in @Timstanks 2mm-thread, but maybe i enhance still some bases, as Tim did.
But on the ohter side, my bases are only 25mm wide, so i will see, what i can do....

Now i can finally setup and play Juno Beach.....

Fantastic Job! I like your ideas with the magnetic Command Post. I shall be exploring this further!!

My long term plan is to do like you have with the magnetic stats labels. With careful sizing you could have stats for 4 different units per square allowing you to field a variety of different units for no extra investment.

Looking forwards to seeing your next installment.
