Creat your own notables
« on: August 01, 2012, 09:45:49 AM »
Not sure if this should go here or in the Imagination section.  Has any one considered rules for creating your own notables based on historic personalities or fictional characters.

This is something I am considering for my own games and I wanted to get an insight that might be available on the subject.

I quite like the idea of doing this too. I'd also like the possibility that players might get lumbered with a prince of the blood who is an utter duffer.

I suppose the only proviso, really, would be to mek sure that they don't become too dominant in the game.  A little tweak in your favour when in the right place, or (if using negative notables) a slight hinderance should be enough to add flavour, but not to unbalance the game.

I originally started with "negative notables" but we phased them out during playtesting because people always found (often silly) ways to keep them out of the battle.  (Attach them to a conscript unit that is defending a mountaintop village nowhere near the fighting, etc.)

There was no point, in my opinion, of having "characters" that players would deliberately leave out of the game, for fear of a penalty.  So I made them all "positive" in some way, although often not in a way that you want or need.

But since you never know what kind of enemy you might face next, on what kind of battlefield, then Who Knows.

Thank you for the insight, Sam. I cna see how that would happen  Just out of interest's sake (and partly because, as I am playing solo or with a friend who will also play purely for the spirit and narrative of the game) what sort of things did you light on for negatives?

Oof, I'd have to dig up all those old files, and that would require me being back home.  (I'm in Germany until 21 August.)

There were things like intense rivalry, jealousy, trying to destroy other notables' careers, drunkenness, a proclivity for duelling, a chance of converting his orders into some other order...   nasty stuff.

The wars in America should have some different notables.  Named characters from the AWI would add flavor to that theater, while the F&I needs character types that are not present.  Gaming French forces that rely on significant native allies, or a majority of native forces, requires native notables to inspire and lead the native forces.

Creating such notables would be fun.  Perhaps we could share such notables here.

OK so I have three for your consideration these can also be seen here: http://fencingfrog.blogspot.com/2012/11/notables-for-maurice.html

These are court personalities for the Grand Duchy of D'Argent.

Sir Robert de Burre:  An English exile of Norman background and friend of the Duke. Sir Robert is capable officer who trains his men well he is an master of battle field manuver.

Social Rank 2, Hazard 10, Instinct: March

Aelric:  a mysterious figure said to be an orphan who saved the Duke's life and made his fortune. Alric is out of place in court society and stays in the back ground. Aelric is not constrained by the same rules that govern the conduct of gentlemen.

Irregular infantry:  If Aelric is commanding irregular infantry and targets a unit with a notable he may force that noble to make a hazard test rather then roll to disrupt.

Social Rank 1, Hazard 9

Barron Triggs: D'Argent's ambassador to the Holly Roman Empire. The Baron is more of a diplomat then a soldier though his connections make him a capable chief of staff, he is also a master of propaganda.   When commanding in the field he is careful and looks after his men.

If used a chief of staff Barron Trigg's connections allow him to recruit an extra mercenary unit to serve with the army if he is the attacker and provides his side with an extra Epic Point if his side is defending.

Social Rank 3, Hazard 11, Instinct Rally

Baron Triggs looks like an extremely powerful Chief of Staff.  Luckily if he is in an army with the other two he will demand a cavalry posting...

That was done intentionally because I realize he is a powerful chief of staff. You have to have at lease one other Rake 3 notable to use him as your Chief of Staff.

Also my though was that these would get shuffled into the deck so they would show up randomly and not necessarily show up all together...

Fair enough.  But if they are in the deck, is there a possibility they will end up being employed by the other side?

Yes there is, lets just say that in that case its the characters evil twin  ;)

Alliteratively they have left my service over some slight to seek their fortune or revenge... hopefully we can patch things up latter.  8)

How about notables for historic battles - Ziethen, the Old Dessauer or Seydlitz, many of whom had a significant impact? An index of. Historic notables might be a thought? As for the negative notables; for a victory like Leuthen you need a genius like Frederick and a Charles of Lorraine, so the negative notable has to have a force of sat at least 20% of units?
