Picking national advantage cards
« on: September 14, 2014, 01:50:53 AM »
Im new to wargames and only intend to play solo or with one family member. we have played several "lite" games which we thoroughly enjoyed. We feel ready to try the big boys game now and play using the full rules, however i cant quite decide what to do about national advantage cards. We are only ever going to play one of the two armies ive created and wondered if it may be best to randomly deal say 3 national cards to each player with an option to buy 2 from that selection for each game.As we are new to the hobby its taken quite a while reading playing and discussing the rules and needless to say we are now both hooked. The advantage cards appear to add flavor to a great set of rules so i would appreciate your thoughts

Even if you have the same figures/units over and over again, the Nat'l Advantages can really remake your army each time.  For example, artillery is very weak under the "standard" rules, but if you have Artillery Academy and Professional Train, then you can really pack a punch.   Cavalry can be disadvantaged against infantry, but not if your elite cavalry is Maison du Roi and Cavaliers,  and so on.

It all depends on what you think is more fun.

If randomizing it is more fun, then sure, do that.

For other people, being able to pick and design their own is more fun.

Picking the national advantages at random has some merit, in that you get a taste for what's out there. So to start with, it's not a bad way to go.

However, as Sam has pointed out, there are combinations that work well together, and you can use a limited collection of miniatures to play many different armies, just by tweaking the national characteristics. There's also the fun of building an army to your playing style or trying to reflect a particular army's character from history. I'm a bit tragic in that I sometimes get more satisfaction out of visualising and designing the perfect army than actually playing with it. So for me, randomly assigning national characteristics takes that away.

Once you have played Maurice a bit you might find it better to pick the notables (officer characters) at random than the national characteristics. They add quite a bit of flavour without greatly altering game balance.

Thanks,I belive the mist is starting to clear! I think your suggestion may be to use imagi nations and give them national characteristics then make the armies the random factor using the same figures (or create more armies). I am new to all of this and hadn't even considered made up armies. We haven't  got as far as notables yet,if too much goes in one ear it tends to dribble out of the other, but you have given me food for thought!

I am awaiting my rules

Do the rules give "ideas/options/opinions" as to which Nationalities should have which advantages during certain periods?

We will be doing SYW and wondered if there was a "rule of thumb" for which nationalities should have a certain type of advantage.  I can certainly see the enjoyment of random or building your own, just wondered if Honour thought certain ones were a natural fit for specific armies within certain campaigns

thanks,
Mike

The historical scenarios included in the rules have national advantages for the protagonists, so you could use those as a starting point.
