Playing ECW with Maurice - Wargames Soldiers & Strategy
« on: December 06, 2016, 06:18:25 PM »
The latest Wargames Soldiers & Strategy has a great article by Nicholas Stock featuring a couple of English Civil War scenarios for Maurice, "The Battles of Newbury, 1643 and Cheriton, 1644 - Soldierly actions in an unhappy war".

I have just finished the article in WSS (the hobby magazine) by Nicholas Stock. Very interesting use of Maurice.

I have played a couple games of Maurice using my American Revolution armies but have not thought to try ECW, that is until now. I'll give it a try using Nicholas' suggestions.

I have a giant box full of WSS (the  war) minis awaiting paint. I plan to start them in 2017 and finish them in 2017. :)

I'll post my ECW results when I get the game finished. Did anyone do Notables for the ECW? If so I would love to give them a try.

I've played a couple of ECW games using Maurice and it works well.
You don't really need to change anything - the rules for pikes are already there.
We also let horse shoot (as he does in his article) but in practice it's a waste of time - against infantry you will be horribly outshot, and against cavalry you need to get stuck in.
