Basing units
fredloan1:
Ok, I am new to the Napoleonic wargaming and I am confused. Lets say I am building a French Division I am confused on the make up of a line regiment. If I am going to do the 1 1/2" x 1" base 8 figures in two rows that is all fusiliers am I making 3 or 4 units like this in a regiment?? Now how do I base the Voltigeurs and Grenadiers flank companies? Are they the irregular troops I mount 4 to a base zig zag? Reading the basing setup how many troops total in a regiment, is it 32 not including the Voltigeur skirmishers? COnfused please help
Scruff:
hello and welcome
What we did for the French was its 4 bases, 6 figs per base, which makes 4 grenadiers and 4 voltigeurs on each end base, filled with fusiliers and command figures
They are based same as the rest of the battalion.
If you want to represent the skirmishers, base a couple extra voltigeurs on a smaller base as markers.
cheers

Scruff,
so you only have fusiliers and grenadiers mounted? No voltigeurs except for markers? Ok still not sure, can you post a picture showing a based french battalion?

Now if I have a G for Grenadier and a V for Voltigeur do I have them in the right places?? Thanks in advance
yorkie:
I would go with this,
GGFF FFFF FCCC FFVV
GGFF FFFF FFFF FFVV
VV VV
G- Grenadiers
F - Fusiliers
C- Command figures
V - Voltigures
The 2 at the front, are the skirmish markers.
If you go for 6 figs per base then just use less fusiliers. I hope this helps, as i know how confusing it can get trying to work out the pesky French.....

OR.....
GGGG FFFF FCCC FFFF
GGGG FFFF FFFF FFFF
VV VV
So this time you have 1 base of grenadiers, 1 command base, and 2 fusilier base. With the voltigers just on the skirmish bases.
Ive seen it done this way, and it has the advantage that, if doing a scenario, you can make units of converged grenadiers.
