We’re finally ready to launch the spiffy new Honour Forum, much improved and ready for the coming launch of Maurice.

As I’ve been saying, this means, alas, that you’ll have to create a new User ID, but hopefully that won’t take more than a few seconds. It’s well worth it, though, to move Lasalle and Maurice to a new home where we have a lot more options for text and graphics, and a much friendlier user interface. And we’ll have space for Might and Reason, too, so we can begin transitioning discussion from the old Yahoo site, to here.

The switch occurs on Thursday evening, Eastern US time. See you there!

This month we will begin the migration to the spiffy new HONOUR discussion forum. The process will take a while because I want to give people time to “evacuate” their favorite scenarios from the Scenario-Wiki, and move them to the new Forum. (Praise Be: scenarios will now be directly available on the forum in special boards, and we don’t need a separate Wiki anymore!)

Alas, this means of course that all the old threads will be lost, and we’ll be starting from scratch. It also means that you’ll need to recreate your User ID and password. (Which should take approximately 20 seconds.)

As we get closer to completing the new Forum, I’ll post reminders.

Work on the cards and book for Maurice continues apace.

The final drafts of the cards are finished. (You can see some of them in the updated version of the free flyer on the Downloads page.)

The last playtesting is wrapping up some of the optional and advanced rules, as well as tightening up here and there.

I’ve scheduled the photography for early February, and am feverishly trying to assemble the right figures and scenery. I want the book to be as pretty as Lasalle.

I’m still thinking of an early-Summer release. A lot depends on the printers, obviously.

I thought I’d share some information about the physical product itself. After a LOT of research, taking bids from printers, and so on, I’ve settled on a full-color softback, once again @130 pages. I decided to switch from hardback to softback for a couple of reasons. First, Lasalle was very expensive to ship, especially overseas. Getting the book a bit thinner and lighter will save everybody money in shipping. Second, many people complained that the postal system in their country mangled the corners of the hardback book in transit. So a softback- in which all the pages and cover are the same dimensions – is easier to protect in a package. And third, I’m switching to a super-sturdy sewn binding this time, to make sure that nobody has any problem with pages coming loose.

So I’m very optimistic that you’ll all be happy with a lighter and stronger book, every bit as attractive as Lasalle.

The cards will be a double-sized deck of 108 in full color, in a lovely two-piece lidded box. Although it costs me a bit more, I was really impressed by how much sturdier the lidded box was, than the traditional “tuck-box” for cards, which can tear easily with repeated use. Remember that for those of you who only want to play the basic rules, a free partial set of the basic cards will be available online as a PDF. (But you’re not going to be able to resist all the fun and cool stuff in the full pack! I mean come on… how many games allow you to strike your enemy with the Gout?)

I hope to have some pricing information for everybody by the end of January, along with some more definitive date for the release.

best,
Sam

In advance of the full Maurice game book and cards, I am offering a free, introductory “Lite” version of the game, with everything you need on PDF. For those of you who are eager to get started and learn the game’s basic systems, this will provide a fun and easy introduction.

Might and Reason, the grand-tactical game and campaign system for 18th century battles, went out of print this Spring, with only a few copies of the original book remaining with retailers. I am therefore offering the original book as a PDF download from the HONOUR website for only $16. (Wow, wadda bargain!)

The original M&R had about 10 color pages, which I have left intact for those with color printers, while the rest of the book is black and white, and the whole thing is very “printer-friendly.” For more information on “Might and Reason” go to the HONOUR homepage and click GAMES. There you will find free downloads for all the 24+ scenarios, plus the variants for the War of Spanish Succession and the Middle Eastern Wars, and all sorts of other good stuff.

If you already know you want a copy, just click PURCHASE and you’ll find it available in the Honour Online Store.

The purchase gives you an email with a Download link that is good for two downloads.

Happy Ferdinand von Schill Day, everybody!

Yes, today, 31 May, is the 201st anniversary of the heroic and slightly silly death of my boy Ferd. (Which, if nothing else, gave the city of Stralsund a local hero to celebrate, other than a strange 14th-century Viking.)

In celebration of this auspicious day, I offer two new fun Optional Rules on the “Downloads” page. The rule for plundering baggage wagons comes from Rafael Pardo, with help from other players on the Forum. And the “Nobility Points” rule is a fun little optional thing that will be going in my next game, but I thought I’d trot it out here.

Enjoy, and despite the historic significance of this say, try not to start any violent rebellions!
