My entire army, is based on 40mmx40mm bases. I make sure all my regiments are painted in a Lasalle 3 battalion (3x4 bases) or 2 battalion Black Powder (2x6). That makes my armies flexible in whatever i want to play, or shall play in the future. I kepped in mind that every french battalion was made in a 6 companies (1 grenadier, 4 center and 1 voltigeur), and so i created this flex army system.

Since i am relative new in the Napoleonic gaming world and i have NOW experience, i started painting plastic Perry, and so my first painted army was a French Conscript army, 9 battalions with 6 westphalian late .. ( Fr Conscripts Corps + Westph. additional brigade). Fr Dragoons & Fr Cuirras. followed very quickly.

I felt it was time to start painting metal and made the chose on foundry 25mm. So i started painting a post 1806 Prussian army, 26 battalions strong, incl ART & horses. (Prussian Army). I can tell you that i was pretty impressed with that all.

So a Bavarian Army, 11 bataillions strong followed, incl art & horses.

Two metal French corps followed, each with 9-11 battalions strong, incl artillery & Light Horses (2 lasalle army).

This year i will make a french Guard army and start with my Austrians. Russians will follow, and later British armies.

My goal in 2015.

For the Kiwi's (and/or nearby Australians and such) - Cam and I have briefly discussed a couple of times whether it I worth aiming to organise a Lasalle Napoleonic Tournament of the Annual Auckland "BattleCry" Tournament in February (2012). Dates would be Saturday 18 & Sunday 19 February. At present Cam and I felt there would be insufficient numbers to warrant it - however I thought I'd see if we could gauge any interest from the Kiwis on here (especially those out of Auckland) to see if it's worth investigating?

What are people's thoughts - if you were interested would you have a high likelihood of attending, and if so what scale preference (15mm or 28mm), and would you be happy with (or able to field an army for) a Core +2 Supports (rather than Core +1) Tournament?

Interested in anyone's feedback?

Cheers,

After a 30 year break from Napoleonics I saw the Lasalle rules, excellent Victrix plastics and decided to use my "dip" method (developed on Hordes Skorne) to produce these fellas:

I was pleased with the effect, especially considering I didn't use any white or black on any of the figures (other than the white undercoat) and it only took 7 weeks to paint 150 of them! I used the Strong Tone AP dip with no highlighting other than P3 paints "Menoth White Highlight" on uniforms and "Umbral Umber"/white highlight mix on the grenadiers bearskins.

Dipped French in campaign greatcoats next!

My full Brunswick Corps got it's first official outing as a complete entity a few weeks ago against Cam's French - it was an all action nail biter for most of the game and you can read about it on my blog. I hope someone finds it interesting and/or enjoyable and/or inspiring...

Hi All,

I understand that units in Lasalle are not meant to be 1:1 matched with batallions, but with most nations this works pretty well in my opinion. Yet I'm still trying to work out how to depict British Batallions. As they were exceptionally large with their 10 companies, I would have expected them to be classified as large units (like e.g. the Austrians). But since they are defined as normal units, I'm thinking about breaking down a Bristish batallion into two Lasalle units - for example depicting in one unit three bases infantry and one base command and in the other unit three bases infantry and one base grenadiers. What do you think about this, and how do you depict your British units?

Very best regards,
Tobi

Hi Chaps,

For the New Zealand guys - just wondering what the preliminary thoughts are about the Lasalle Competition in Hamilton at Easter - who's likely to attend or tentatively planning to, what is the format likely to be? 28mm & 15mm or just one or the other? I see Nick Garden is listed as Umpire but I'm not familiar enough with everyone's Moniker's on here so not sure if he's on this list?

I see the Hamilton Immortals have 3 Napoleonic Rulesets listed for NatCon (so potentially 6 Competitions if 15mm & 28mm for each):
1st Volley (Umpire: Russell Warner)
Lasalle (Umpire: Nick Garden)
FoGN (Umpire: Brett Preston-Thomas)

Obviously 1st Volley is Hamilton's own Napoleonic Ruleset - so not sure if there will be much interest from outside their own club and other Waikato/Bay of Plenty guys? Likewise AFAIK only the North Shore Wargaming Club in Auckland play any FoGN - is anyone playing that elsewhere in the country? It would seem to me Lasalle has the best potential for numbers and truly 'national' support (i./e. entrants from all round the country rather than just one club or region)...

...so would be nice to get some good support for Lasalle for NatCon - and I know I owe an effort to do so myself after having to renege on Call To Arms recently...

Any thoughts?

I trust it's okay to mention this here? I have some surplus Perry's Brunswick Troops I'm looking to sell as I have doubled up on a few units - all painted and based for Lasalle - painting by the same guy who painted all by British figs people may have seen on my blog. Before I list on EBay or such is anyone here interested - if so please contact me offline for more information, pics, etc (if you don't have my email you can use my blog contact page). I have no issues with shipping overseas, etc, and the Army approximately consists of (I haven't done a detailed count up to the exact last figure yet):

4 Infantry Battalions (2 Line & 2 Light Btns each 4 bases & 20-24 figs)
Part of Leib Guard Battalion (15 figs)
1 Hussar Regiment (6 bases & 12 Figures)*
1 Foot Artillery Battery (4 Guns & 12 Crew Figures)

* The Hussar Regiment is the exact same one that has appeared in photos of some of my game reports.

Hi All,

I've watched the discussion about the Lasalle-tournament in New Zealand with great interest and I'm thinking about organizing a 2-day tournament (28mm scale) next year in Ulm, Germany.

As Ulm is quite meningful for the Naploeonic Era it would be adequate to link the event with a guided tour to the battlefield in order to experience first hand where Mack was beaten.

I'd like to get a feeling what size the event should be (and in which language the battlefield-visit should be organized), so I'm asking you your opinion: Without any comittment - would you be interested to participate at such an event in Ulm next year?

Very best regards,

Below is the rule pack for Call to Arms, I have posted this up early so people can get a feel for the mission and give me feedback if there is anything they really dont like (Ill ignor it but sometimes its good to vent online)

As im not sure on how long we have in the hall I am hoping for five games, Three on the first day and two on the second.

This has been cut from word so sorry about the odd layout of the page.

Call to Arms 2011 tournament rule set.

1, Game will be Core plus one support choice with 25-28mm figures.

2, BW will be 50mm for all measurements.

3,	Table size is 8’ x 6’ with pre set terrain.

4,	All figures must be painted and based. The basing does not have to be 50mm wide as long at is it close.

Rule Adjustments

5, Infantry do not half dice in combat if fighting cavalry that is not in open ground.

6, “Squares moving” “Irregular Units Recovering” “Howitzer and Rocket Batteries” and “Compressed Artillery” optional rules will be used from the rulebook.

7,	“I’m with Stupid” “Obstacles: A simpler Alternative rule” “Impetuous Cavalry” and “Forming line by platoon” will be used from the OPT-rule download available from http://www.sammustafa.com/honour/downloads/

Weekend Missions

8,	Scenario’s to be used over the weekend will be Take by Force all Brigade supports will count as Organic so all troops are to be deployed on the table at the start of the game, and the standard mission as per page 86 of rulebook which will be using the standard reserve rules but not the “weather” or “Roll for the board” phases.

9,	Competition point system
Major Victory 6pts
Minor Victory 5 Pts
Draw (Winning)	3 Pts
Draw (Losing)	2 Pts
Loss 2 Pts
In a draw the army that has lost the most amount of units is the loser.
+ 1 pt if you lost but broke the enemy army.

I would like to thank Paul Sheldon for his Missions posted on the Lasalle Wiki.

Scenario – Take by force

Outline

Three important objectives have been observed by the powers that be, you and your men must take the objectives at all costs. The three objectives are placed along the centre line of the table, one is placed in the middle of this line, then both players starting with the Attacker place an objective each which can not be within nine BW of another objective or four BW of the table edge.

Mission Rules

Game length – 16 turns plus bonus turns

Attacker / Defender – Decided as per the rulebook, however both the Attacker and the Defender get the bonus battalions and the extra General. These extra troops count as a separate Brigade for the Deployment phase only. The Defender if they are able to use “Home Field advantage” rule then they may not chose the short edges for the deployment zone but may deploy all their Brigades after the attacker has fully deployed.

Attacker
-	First Turn
-	Deploy first
-	Deploy by Brigade

Defender
-	Deploy by Brigade

Ending the Battle

The battle ends when after turn 16 the players start rolling as per the Bonus Turns on page 66 of the rulebook. Whichever player holds the most objectives wins; to hold objectives there should be no enemy units within 4BW.
A player also wins if he breaks an opponents army.
If neither of the above conditions is met by the result is a tie.

I am looking forward to hearing what you think of this.

Cheers

Tim

Cam and I continued our series of "100-Days" games at the weekend - for this one we used Paul from Wellington, NZ's, suggested British stats of Valiant/Experienced/Linear/Rifles/SK3 for the 95th Rifles (and equivalents) and Valiant/Experienced/Linear/SK1 for all other British (non-Light) Infantry Regiments.

The battle was a somewhat dour affair, but still had some interesting moments - read the report and see the images here: http://wargaming.info/2011/picton-holds-on-the-chaussee-de-charleroi/

Hi,

after much deliberation I'm almost at the point of deciding to go with 15mm on 30mm x 25mm bases. Before I commit and abandon Sam's recommended 40mm BW for 15mm figs can you answer this question for me. I'll be using a 6' x 4' table. Can you play a game with two support groups on that size table with 40mm BW? Or realistically are you limited to one support?

Cheers

Greetings All - I have a small dilemma and am hoping someone here may be able to help? 2-3 years ago I purchased several pre-painted 28mm French Generals off EBay - I've just hauled them out, and have identified 5 of them easily enough (Foundry & Front Rank figures) but am stumped on the last 2. If anyone recognises the figure or pose of No.4 and No.6 below I'd certainly appreciate a heads up or any suggestions. There is more info and slightly better quality images on my blog at: http://wargaming.info/2011/do-you-know-that-general-monsieur/ - appreciate any help anyone can provide...

No.4 has the plume broken off his Shako – obviously lost in transit – and is in what appears to be a Hussar uniform. He’s been painted up in red trousers & pelisse with a blue tunic (with red facings) which may or may not indicate who he is. His horse is not a Foundry one, nor any of the current Front Rank ones (it has a distinctive trotting pose with it’s head up but turned and it’s base is an unusual shape). There appears to be nothing in the Perry range that matches either…?

No.6 is in what looks like a Hussar Uniform, with Colpack (with red ‘bag’), and has been painted in all blue uniform (trousers & tunic - with red facings) but has a red pelisse. He looks to have a light cavalry cartridge box & belt over his shoulder so may be a Cavalry Command figure? His horse looks very Foundry like in style and size – but I can’t find any matching figure on the Foundry website (nor the Perry or Front Rank ones for that matter)…?

I'm almost there with my Perry French.

8 x Battalions of French infantry with Foot Artillery & 2 x Large Cuirass Squadrons with Horse Artillery

I've used the Perry bases that come with the plastic box sets.

Now my infantry battalions are 6 bases (6 men to a base) and i'd like to keep them as 6 bases rather than the usual four, just for the look. My cavalry 6 bases; 3 horses per base (they may be a bit small for Large units if i'm using 6 x bases for regular infantry)

So with that in mind, would an 8' x 6' table be better rather than the usual 6x4?

Are there any other amendments i need to make to the rules to take into account the extra bases i'm using

Just the artillery to paint; i'll post photos when they're all done

Thanks

I would like to play games as soon as possible so I am looking for Scenarios of small encounters that will allow me to play with whatever I have ready whitout waiting to have a full list.
Moeover, is there a way to translate NapBat OOB in to Lasalle OOB?
I am sure there is, I have seen the ones of RPardo, but suggestions are much appreciated.
Thanks.

I have posted a proposed AB-compatible army list to the scenario wiki for the 2nd Netherland Division at Waterloo.

http://sites.google.com/site/honourscenarios/ab-army-list---2nd-netherlands-division-waterloo

This is a companion the Quatre Bras list I previously posted.

The core Waterloo list is similar to the Quatre Bras list (although this one is based on Saxe-Weimar's troops fighting around Papelotte). The main differences are support choices. As well as organic British and Hanoverian infantry, you get Reserve British Light Cavalry, Reserve Prussian Infantry or Reserve Prussian Light Cavalry.

My main interest is to show how more and diverse army lists can be constructed by looking at real OOBs and battles, and using the ratings in the book. I claim no particular knowledge on the army.

If you have Dutch Belgian troops you can plausibly combine them with Britsh Guard infantry, Dutch light cavalry, British, Hanoverian or Brunswick infantry, Prussian infantry or Prussian cavalry. By having two lists, rather than a generic one, we can limit the support options (so you can't get both British Guard and Prussian Cavalry for instance).

Unit ratings, where available, are from the book. I ain't changing them.

Hopefully there is someone somewhere with a Dutch Belgian army desperate for some AB style games. Any feedback is appreciated.

Cam

I am assuming that I am not the only person to base a new, 28mm army composed mostly of plastic for these rules. What appears to be the default basing scheme for 28mm players who aren't trying to keep an old system?

What seems to be the consensus favorite among all 28mm games?

How "robust" do the rules seem for playing with units that aren't quite 4xBW in width? For example, if a tournament organizer sets up a tournament with a declared 50mm base width would a player whose infantry units are 4 men in 2 ranks to a 40mm frontage (think WAB or GW) be at a disadvantage or an advantage? Would the difference be noticable as long as the player used 50mm for all movement and shooting?

Thanks

Hello,

I'm a newbie to Napoleonic gaming. I've painted them before but never really got into gaming the period beyond some skrimishes.

Seeing as I'm starting out fresh and I have no other friends getting into this game yet, what basing should I use for my 28mm infantry and cavalry?

I see the recommended base size is 50x50mm but it appears most base sizes posters have indicated they use are about 40mm in width.

What I want to avoid is basing to the "recommendation" then turning up at a "bring your own miniatures" tournament or pickup game at an HMGS convention and finding out that everyone else is using another basing size typically used in another game "X". Because that's the standard everyone uses and knows about. Except me.

I have a collection of 28mm Napoleonic figs mounted individually on 1" sq bases. If Im looking at the basing diagram correctly for 20mm+ sized figs, it looks like one option for me will be to place 4 figs on a 2" sq sabot. This would make for 16 figure small battalions. All of my artillery is already on 2" sq bases and my cav are on 1x2" bases, so could be placed 2 figs on a 2" sabot.

Does this sound like a good option?

I note that you could do double bases; 4"x2" rectangular stands with 8 figs each....would this just be another option, or is there an advantage in doing this? Obviously, with the cost & time required to paint 28's, 8 figs per stand might be a bit tough...

Thanks....Faron (Die Hard Fan of Grand Armee in 6mm!)
