After a defender loses an indecisive combat, it falls back 1 or 2 BW. The
attacker advances 2 BW. It seems that most or all players stop the advancing unit just short of the defender, but I can't find anything in the rules to support that. On p60, it says that the advancing unit stops short if it would contact *another* enemy unit. Doesn't the inclusion of the word "another" mean that the stopping short rule doesn't apply to the falling back defender?

I have played that an advance can't make contact with any enemy - relying on the para above the one you have quoted: not being able to "fit" into the area. But looking again that is a bit vague.
But if you can advance into contact with an enemy that falls back it would raise a lot of questions - do you fight the combat again this phase? Can the contacted unit then make a retrograde move in the move phase? Can the contacted unit charge? Can the advancing unit react (shoot/fall back) in their turn even if it is contact?

I agree, it probably shouldn't be allowed. I suggest that an errata should be added, replacing "another" with "an".

On p.31, there's the rule that stipulates you can't "React into contact with the enemy," except by countercharge, thus you can't fall back into contact, as a Reaction.
When falling back from combat, p.39, left column, italics, gives an example of how to stop the fall-back prior to making contact with the enemy.
As for advancing into contact with the enemy, I thought that was pretty clearly forbidden on p.60, left column, last paragraph, but I can change "another" to "any" in the "Clarifications."

It wasn't clear to me, but then again, no matter how you write something, there'll always be some idiot who doesn't get it :-).
I think it would be a good idea to put it in the clarifications. To me, "another enemy unit" means "some other enemy unit other than the one we've been discussing".
thanks

Hi
I found the above 'problem' during my first Lasalle game and I stopped the advancing unit short of the loser of the combat. I followed the advice of p.60 (luck!) but I think that a clarification would be very hepfulRafa
