I have had a couple of games where lucky dice blew away the oppositions artillery. Once I was the beneficiary and once I was on the receiving end. In a small game it can be quite decisive.
Hi Alan ....Trev told me last week that possibly somebody might use 25 Russian guns on the table, for me a bit of a strange choice but the mass batteries can be effective especially with interlocking firezones and the bounce through! I hope Borodino does not see this post as a smear on the Russian army:)
cheers Paul:)
I have a total of 14 guns in my French army, so far they haven't been that effective though probably because I'm not using them correctly. On defense I have been too spread out so they have been easy to avoid. On attack I find after a few moves everyone else is in the way and the best use I have for them is to put on the flanks to deny room for enemy reinforcements.
Hi Mike...do you use the 1813 French Conscript army? not a bad army just needs to be handled with a bit of care ....plenty of guns though to fight the Austrians and Ruskies:)....I wonder how many lads compress their guns to deal out the pain, can be a very useful between squares when you have no cav support....lets see the cav bounce off in the face of cannister!
cheers Paul:)
@ The Loweredge Lip or should that be Maltby Mouth? - A respectable 15 guns in my Russian Grenadier list [grin]
I have taken out a infantry unit with one turn of fireing (9 hits) when JP marched his column at long range. It has never happened again
I was about to say that i don't have the options that Trev does but then again given your fondness for proxying "they're not French infantry they're Russian Guards, KASAM!! now its Avante Guarde Grenz ..." if i was playing you i'd put down blocks of green lego and tell you it was all Guards with lots of artillery.
Noticed how you've avoided all offers for Marengo ohh Feather Rustler Wannabe
In case people haven't twigged - Paul and i are at the same club (i put in an honoury appearance only rarely). Paul likes to attempt to wind people up, some would say troll, i like to take the bait for my own amusement.
Its meant (mostly) in good fun ;)
James
:)Hi James ....a little bit of fun never hurt anyone:)
as you say Artillery can be pretty decisive, I've seen quite a few games that have been well and truely decided by artillery fire?...are they a tad too powerful at this scale of engagement and possibly too many guns on the table?
cheers and see you very soon Paul:)
ps you've only been down to the club about once in about 18 months....
Not sure I'd call it care, there's only one way to handle them - attack columns. I'm thinking there is quality in quantity in LaSalle with the 2:1 dice in close combat. Handling the arty is my main challenge at present.
My russians are currently out gunned by the damnable 1813 frenchman - every brigade choice he has comes with two batteries which eventually totals more ordinance than mine.
quite disgraceful.
Luckily so far I have managed to keep destroying one battery more than he does to ensure he never quite reaches a final total greater than mine on the table.
game wise, the trick is to make him pick the side, so he has to set up first, and then you can let him advance onto the guns while his are still racing to get into position. When you pick the side with Russians, those big batteries really struggle to get a full target for more than a turn at a time. all in all, our duels tend to be a pre emptive shot while the other guy is unlimbering, rather than a toe to toe roundshot duel - so many better things to fire at.
Counter Battery Fire in Lasalle is an absolute waste of time - and rightly so, which is as it should be!! ;-)
i rather like it when people fixate on the russian artillery. It has its uses, obviously, but i think all arillery is generally overrated and easily dealt with
I'm suprised to see you here today James, after last nights discussion on work. Obviously all sorted, or you're just smiling and trying to forget about it!
Hi Guys:)....I must admit, plenty of guns can be a bit of an hinderance at times especially when you are the attacker, I'm not sure about them being overated though? a solid gun line supported by infantry and cavalry can be a pain....its nice to use the Brit rifles though to make them limber up:)...
