Attack Column or Wave 2x3?

A quick query that arose from events and/or discussion in our most recent game here in Auckland between Cam and I (& Mike who was observing):

Can large units of Infantry (in Column) & Cavalry (in Waves) have a frontage of just 2 bases and depth of 3 - I recall something I read in the rulebook that kinda left this open as a possibility - but the only thing being that they are specifically not included in the diagrams (on page 13). Mike & Cam felt the diagrams were definitive by definition, but I thought I'd raise it just to be certain?

Surely pages 12 and 13 are part of the rules and provide the definition? Otherwise you could claim a large unit deployed 2 wide by 3 deep was a March column as well or some other such nonsense. Page 101 has reference to the special case of Austrian 'Mass Formation' but this is a specific exception to the standard rule.

In any case real world attack columns were much wider than deep. They only look so blocky in wargames because the depth of the models v ground scale is way off. Remember a line formation would be about 2mm deep in Lasalle if shown properly at the ground scale. Columns would be much shallower than a single element base depth.

Austrian "Mass" is probably what you saw......similar to column but not quite the same.

Alan/Trev - yes it may be that was what was in my mind - but also that I had initially read pages 12 & 13 as example diagrams rather than definitive ones. I actually said to Cam & Mike during our game on Sunday that I thought it was specific to just Inf or Cav not both, but wasn't sure which - so likely it is the Austrians.

Anyway I skimmed through the rulebook and couldn't find anything that matched my 'fuzzy recollection' - so figured better to ask here, even if it seems a bit of a redundant question, than die wondering! ;-)

And yep Alan, I'm aware of the ground scale distortion with figs and that 'columns' IRL are nothing like how they appear on the wargames table. It wasn't anything to do with how they appear on table... :-)
