Hi,
I have just ordered my copy from Black Hat Miniatures so after looking at the pdf on basing troops I wondered what was the basing size for commanders? I have been building Wurttemberg units for the General de Brigade rules so my units are the same size as lasalle but I have not done the commanders as yet. The units are based on a frontage of 36mm which I will keep but have not based any commanders as yet. I do not know until I get the book what the allied Wurttemberg contains but from what I have read each allied brigade comes with a sub-commander so I will need one at least until Sam finds the time to look at a Wurttemeberg list like the other minor nations.

Basing for commanders

I have a similar question, as I'm trying to get a force ready for the OZ Sydney/Maroubra game this saturday.
This is my first napoleonic army (lots of ancients, ww2, fantasy & SF though)
The basing I'm using is 40x30 for inf and cav, and 40x40 for artillery (40x80 for limbers)
For, mainly aesthetic reasons and to make them distinctive, I'm basing my sub-commanders and commander on round bases.
Currently, I'm using approx 30mm washers for the sub-commanders and a 48mm disc of plastic card for the commander.
This is mainly because I want to make a little diorama for the commander : General and aid discussing a map and a hussar with message clutched in fist galloping up.
I don't anticipate any problems with the sub-commanders, but are people likely to take the commander's base size amiss?
Across the corner measure for the 40x30 is slightly larger than the base size...
If it is a problem, I'll mark a point on the base and say that's where the command radius is measured from.

I have just started playing Lasalle and I have almost completed a 28mm Prussian core force. My command bases are 40mm x 50mm for sub commanders and 50mm x 80mm for the commander. My opponent's command base has 3 mounted figures and is about 100mm square.
We have agreed that you measure the command distance from the command figure rather than the base and then you are free to base commanders as you wish and receive no particular advantage for your base size.

I couldn't find anything in the rules regarding the recommended size for commander and/or subcommander bases. On page 20 it does say that a unit is within command range, "if any portion of its bases is within range of any portion of his [commander or subcommander] base."
It means that a commander's base is not really important, but can make a slight difference. That is, if one player uses bases that are 1" (25.4mm) square, and another player uses bases that are 1.5" (28.1mm) square, then that player will have a 1/2" (12.7mm) longer reach. Is that a major factor?
As for a standard? Well, I guess it is up to your gaming group to choose their own. However, in the example on page 70, it shows subcommander bases at 1BW x 1BW - which seems a bit big for one mounted figure.
Throughout the rule book there are a few pictures with commanders or subcommanders figures in them, and the pictures show bases of various sizes. There seems to be no standard, so you pays your money and you takes your choice.
Now, if someone were to come to the gaming table with 3" (76.2mm) subcommander bases, and the standard BW both of you are using is 1.5" (28.1mm), then it's time to break out that craft-saw ;-)
