I never thought basing would be such a dilemma. I have always gamed in 15s/18s, but I have now painted up some 28s. With scenario-based games and when I am supplying all of the figures, or when a game is limited to just my own group, things are simple. Having said that, I cannot decide how to base my 28s for this game. I have read other posts suggesting 2"x2" or 40-50mm, but I would like to come to some general agreement as to basing standards for 28s in the US. If I show up at Historicon and want to play someone I do not necessarily know, I do not want to have an "incompatible army." I know standardized basing has never been achieved in Napoleonics, but is there any possible way to make it happen? Maybe just for this game? If not, what is the most "common" or "popular" way to go?

On page 5 of the Lassale rules, the recommended base sizes for 20mm+ figures is 2" (50.8mm) square. So it might be a good bet that others might be taking this as the "standard", but anything goes.

I am leaning toward that scheme, but I dont think 4 2"x2" squares make a very nice looking "square" formations!

It doesn't. Base them one rank deep, 15mm frontage per infantry, 20mm per cavalry.

2"x2" for our stuff out here in West Texas....4 x 28mm figs per base or 2 cav per base...all of my stuff is mounted individually on 1" squares for Sharp Practice, so we are using 2" sabots...

The only down side we have found, is that if you go with 2"x2" mounting is that you need a 5' x 8' table to get the proper table depth for a game....4' is just too small to get the proper effect for artillery...

I assume you are concerned because you want to potentially play in tournies. If so then anything <= 2" x 2" should be fine - just make up some sabots for when you want to play with others. You can always go up in size but it isn't so easy to go down.
Personally I am using 40mm by 40mm because it uses 4 rather than 6 figures per stand but still looks good and isn't too top heavy as can happen with single ranks sometimes.

Our club has used 2x2 for basing in 25/28mm. This is what we had used for out Might and Reason games. I have selfish reasons for keeping the 2x2 format in that I can then use my Ottoman Might and Reason army to combat a whole new generation of Napoleonic armies.
