Hello, I know which option is the best brigade to play with a Avant-garde in 1809. The first would choose Organic or Reserve. And then decide whether to put more infantry or cavalry over.
Also depending on the opponent, if you know where, of course.
I really love the Austrian hussars but would have too little cavalry against infantry?.
The obvious choice would be a brigade of chasseurs but they are reserves.
Do you think?.
Best option for an Austrian Avant-Garde??

First, don“t know what you mean with "brigade of chasseurs" , I can not see them as legal choose for austrian avant-garde.
At first sight both reserve brigades seem a bad election to me (totally subjective) , being inferior to the organic ones, specially if you take account them being reserves.
-Grenadiers, even being Valiant, does not compensates the infantry organic option being large(+) units
-Cuirassiers shock and size hardly pays when faced with an organic 4 units hussar brig . a closer go than grens but not sufficient in my opinion.
Between the organic options I would discard initially the "cavalry" option, as I prefer four valiant units against two lance armed, so my choose would be limited to infantry and hussars.
I would have a hard time choosing between those two in a "one support unit" game,
with hussars you got a final army with so much cavalry units as infantry ones,
this can be an advantage (read the multiple posts about "concerted attacks") but I feel you can have a difficult time when forced to defend, specially given the poor artillery at your disposal.Posted 1 year ago # -
Sorry, but brigade of chasseuers means Curassiers brigade.
And your election are infantry brigade option, no??.Posted 1 year ago # -
I would most surely elect hussars but with infantry brigade in a very close second post.

I have used the Hussar brigade and the infantry brigade. If you are attacking you already get the large lancer unit and a large hussar unit, so the infantry may not be a bad option depending on the opponent. The hussars could give you pursuit advantage and the mobility of a 2nd horse battery. So, these 2 would be my choices as well.

Hi Borxta,
Have a look at the Austrian orders of battle for Aspern-Essling and Wagram:

http://www.cgsc.edu/CARL/nafziger/809GCF.pdfIf you are thinking of a historically based 1809 AvantGarde Division, then probably its the infantry or landwehr options (I assume the Vienna Freiwilliger Battalions count as landwehr?).
