   Hello,

   Given: 40mm width basing is becoming the de facto choice in the US (at least it seems so).

   Does the rule mechanic of giving 1/2 dice to units that fail to achieve sufficient front coverage mitigate the need for basing to be exact?

   What benefit/detriment(s) are realized when players basing doesn't match that aren't mitigated by the above?

   We recently played with the infantry on 9/8x1 (30mmx25mm), Cavalry 1.5x1.25 (40mmx30), artillery on 40mmx40mm and didn't have any issues. But both sides were based in this manner.

   What though could one experience if one side were based with 40mm width and the other say 3/4. Would the rules work as long as movement/shoot/command ranges were measured the same?

   Thoughts?

   Would it matter for determining if a unit covers less than half the frontage in assault. I guess the base-widths differences are minimal but you know how tournament players can get ;)

   The only issue is that 30mm wide allows closer units on the field and thus potentially units based that way may have a little advantage for shooting and bringing multiple units against their opponent. This of course is important in Lasalle to win sustained pushes and attacks, so may have an impact. The impact of this may or may not make a real difference in true games. Some people obviously will say it could/would. :)

   I'd think temp sabot bases would be easy way to do this and avoid re-basing if there are objections.
