   The KGL (defender) in line are being attacked in the front by the 39e in AC(-1DISR) and in the left flank by 50e in AC. 4 bases for each unit. No terrain issues. No Esprit inequity. Both French units are in Command but different GdeB. The 50e subcommander is a clever tactician, the 39e is average.

   I can see that the French have 7+8 die=15 for 2 units, do the KGL have only 4 die as they are defending their flank from one of the French units. I think I am unsure if you do these combats sequentially ie 39evKGL (7dv8d), than 50evKGL (8dv4d) or all at one time. I believe the example 5 on page 63 is confusing me as it seems to suggest that you do the combat on 1 throw(15dv4d). I am sure it must be sequential but I thought I would check.

   Also does only one subcommander have an effect on the combat, each sc here is within command range of his own unit, but not the other. So how does that effect the clever tactician bonus for the 50e?

   Yes, if the defender is flanked, then his dice are halved, even if not all attackers are flanking him.

   And yes, only one subcommander - your choice - affects the battle with his Tactics. As long as he has one unit in the battle, and is command range of it.

   Yes but do you resolve one combat and then the other. Or are they all resolved at one time, so in this example the french throw 15 die at one time and the british throw 4 die and that the French score hits on a 4 or above, while the British only score on 5 or above.

   No. Combat is always one defending unit, against however many attackers, as per page 54.

   I believe, I am being sort of thick here, but page 54 seems to refer to multiple defenders and the order in which the combats are resolved. My example is a single defender against multiple attackers. Do you add all the die of all the attackers and throw them at one time ie. two four base attackers (no mods) would throw 16xD6 at once?

   Again sorry for not getting this.

   Yes, the attacker adds his dice together. Page 54 is the basic combat resolution procedure, no matter how many combats there are to resolve:

   "At the start of the Combat Phase, both players roll a die. In a tie, the defender wins. The winning roll has the first choice in combat resolution: he designates one defending unit that is in contact with the enemy, declares it a combat, and then the two sides resolve that combat, including any fall-backs and advances resulting from it.

   Then the other player picks a defending unit and resolves that combat. The two sides take turns, picking combats to resolve in the order of their choice, each time choosing one defending unit against any/all the attackers in contact with it."

   And just to be clear, a defending unit is classified as one whose turn it is, not the nominal "Defender" of the objective? I.E. my unit has just been charged by an enemy unit during the enemy's activity phase, and on my combat resolution phase my unit acts as a defender, regardless of whether or not I am the Attacker or Defender in the larger game board sense?

    Also remember that your Cavalry that counter-charged are also count as defending which can set up some nasty for attacking Infantry if you win the die to choose a defending unit (I choose the Cavalry as first defender, so the attacking Infantry count as Infantry not in Square vs Cavalry)

    Yes, that's the whole idea of the Countercharge. It's one of the tricks of the British peninsular and French "Conquest" armies, with their "Superior Commander" rule, who always gets the first choice of combat resolutions.
