   Hi
   I regularly use Cossacks (I wargame the 1813 campaign) and whereas these irregular units are useful for pursuit after the battle, they can not charge regular foes, so usually they remain iddle during the battle.
   Sam addressed this issue (I can remember) saying that Cossacks not were used in formed battles but only in skirmishers and ambushes, but I think (and some other players too) that Cossacks must be given a chance to fight. This is my optional rule:
   1) Irregular cavalry units may charge enemy units standing in 'march column' formation
   2) Irregular cavalry units must to pass a 'Discipline' test to initiate the charge
   3) If routed in 'decisive combat' the irregular cavalry unit is immediately broken.
   In that way, the opportunist and volatile behavior of these cavalrymen could be simulated, so they could also take part in the fight
   Any opinion?

   Is there any historical example where cossack units attempted to close quarters with enemy troops in any kind of coordination with regular troops from his side?

   Withouth them I do not see the reason for rules to allow for it......

   In Germany 1813, almost all Allied armies or corps had one or several units of Cossacks attached. These units were used, not in great and formal battles but in minor affaires such as played with Lasalle.
   There are many memories talking about them, but I have no spared time for searching for (sorry!). However, a simple Google search will show many instances. For example see at 'The Life of General Sir Robert Wilson'

   Think these amendments would add a little more value to choosing cossacks especially for pick up games.

   Perhaps point one could be amended a little to allow an impetuous attack on the flank or rear of a unit in addition to the march column. (perhaps incurring a disruption for charging also)

   HI

   Hold on there! Cossacks do wonderful things as they are!

   You can:

   hold bad going
   prevent counter charges
   hold objectives and make the defender test
   turn minor into major victories
   tie up infantry and attract the enemy cav away from the main game

   If you allow Cossacks to charge, allow regular infantry to charge them as well......

   LaSalle is not just minor skirmishes but a sector of the battlefield, one that is under your command and with assets (support choices) provided to you by higher command.

   Im with Ashur, love my cossacks at the moment... run them round behind the enemy and he either sends some cav back to chase em away or you start to loiter around his rear and you start to block his ability to with draw the full movement amount.

   Love the idea having some French Cuirassiers forced to fall back 5-6 BD and find some cossacks in the way :)

   Yes Scruff, I forgot that, so you can also:

   kill enemy by blocking fall backs; and
   force enemy out of command range by making them draw 1BW around your Cossacks!

   I also agree with Ashur: the only real utility I found for cossacks is to block the falling back of routed enemies, but that it seems to me somewaht 'artificial', at least in the case of routed regular cavalry. I want some 'real' action for my cossacks! ;-p
