The example at the bottom of pg36 says the French cav cannot countercharge as "There is no way for the French cavalry to countercharge against Russian A without contacting Russian B..."
Why can't the French cavalry put a small wheel on initially so that when it charges forward it hits only Russian A with its corner only (and so does not contact Russian B)?

Without actually going into the software to measure it, it looks to my eyeballs like the French cavalry couldn't wheel and charge against A, without interpenetrating his friendlies, and/or clipping a bit of B. At least that's the impression I wanted to convey.

A 1mm wheel would be sufficient for the cavalry to just hit B and that will not shift the rear base very much at all. Unless the picture is not to scale (so the cavalry are all but touching their friendly infantry) a wheel would work.
But Keith's answer would solve it - is he correct?
There are two equally close targets within 4BW in front of the cavalry. Are they both mandatory targets (so both must be charged) or does a player choose only one as "closest".
If the answer is they must charge both, what would happen if cavalry had two mandatory targets but they cannot hit both in a single charge (say one is off to their left and one is off to their right).

But that wouldn't be a legal countercharge, because B isn't in contact with the enemy.
Unless you're talking about the second illustration? In that case, with A and B both being legal targets, then Yes, you could countercharge either of them assuming you had the space to do so.
Regarding Mandatory charges, there is no requirement to charge ALL enemy units that are close to you. Only "the closest." If two are equidistant, you may choose one.

That will make it easier to attack with large units - I was assuming if I had two enemy in front of me I would have to charge both - could not put a small wheel on and charge one. Now I can concentrate my musketry on one enemy and charge just that one when it is shot up.
