Defending INF vs multiple ATT

Hi. We had a great game hear in Avalon in copenhagen this sunday.
The Austrians defeated the french in a valley fight. Even though the Austrian Cuirassiers where routed be a combination of french Hussars and Chasseurs.
We had an Austrian large infantry unit in attack column being charged by a Chasseur(1xDISR), Hussar(1xDISR) and a French veteran line infantry regiment. The Austrians succeded in forming square.(Not sure this is a good thing though).
Initially the austrian would have 12 dice. The french: chasseur 4(8-1disr/2 attacking square) hussar 5 (8-1disr+2 higher esprit/2 attacking square)French infantery 8 dice.
All in all 12 vs 17 dice. The question is should the austrians hale their dice due to being attacked by inf when being in a square?

Hi Morten. Glad you had an enjoyable game.

The Austrians would be halved whether they were in square or not. A defender is halved if attacked by cavalry and not in square or by infantry if in square. So either way they would be halved one time and one time only. Page 57 covers it.

They are also halved because of defending against more than one opponent aren't they?

No, just the attacker can be halved if it has another opponent.

It is the right thing to do (I've verrrrrrry quickly learnt that) - As defender in a combined arms attack you always get halved - but by forming square you can at least halve the Attacking Cavalry whereas not forming square has no effect (you still get halved) - so as the guys above mentioned your Austrians were always gonna roll 6 Dice regardless, by forming square you only faced 17 Dice rather than 24 Dice! I assume the Austrians went 'poof' and vanished? :-)

No actually the french had two turns ago reached their breaking point. This charge happened in the activation phase of turn 16 and the french failed their morale check in the status. :-)

Huh? :-? Sorry Morten don't understand the relevance - was that something between You & Alan, as it doesn't seem relevant to the question & answers?

John - I think he means the Austrians didn't go "poof" as they were saved by the bell i.e. the French failed morale and lost the game before the close combat was fought.

Ahh, right! Sorry - lost the plot on that one!! That makes perfect sense... :-) A lucky escape then... ;-)
