I keep on stumbling on this very simple point. Fire is in the reaction (first) phase. French turn (not defending) has target, can it fire this turn and then charge in activity (third) phase at the same target. I suspect this is ok, but the wording in the QRS always confuses me, as it says under sequence of play: DEFENDING UNITS take reaction, but on page 41 it just says you can fire "when your unit has a target in range".

John I think the simple answer is that any unit is eligible to fire in the Reaction Phase if they have a target. The same unit can then move in the Activity Phase, including charging the unit they just fired at.
For evidence see p23, para 4 "The Reaction Phase is also when your units may shoot, whether or not they have been attacked by the enemy." Then p23, para 6 "During the Activity Phase, you move your units."
See also p41 for 'Reaction: Fire' and para 2 "Any unit that can fire, and which has a target, may do so at this time, whether or not it has been attacked"
See p31 for units eligible to charge.
So I think its fairly conclusive that in a turn a unit can shoot then charge.
