Empire Theatre Austrian Core Avant-Garde and Infantry Division Composition

Hello Sam,

I am building up my 1809 Austrian force and was wondering if you could give me a few details on core force composition. I would guess that the infantry division core would be something like 6 Infantry, 2 Landwehr, 1 Bde Btry, and 1 Pos Btry; while the Avant-Garde might be 4 Jager or Grenz, 2 Hussar or Chevaulegers, and 2 Horse Btry. The organic brigades could be some more infantry or mixed brigades while the reserves would be Cuirassier or Grenadier Bdes. Am I on track? Thanks much.

Yay, the Good Guys! (my Avant-Garde division is my favorite of all my armies for this game.)

There are three Austrian army lists for the "Empire" period: Infantry Division, Reserve Division, and Avant Garde.

If you're doing the standard Infantry Div, the core list is 2 small infantry, 4 large infantry, and 1 Brigade BTY.

The Avant-Garde core list is: 1 small Jäger, 2 large Grenz, 2 large Infantry, 1 large Uhlan, and 1 Cavalry BTY.

The Reserve core list is: 6 small grenadier BNs and 1 Brigade BTY.

Ok, so all of my wonderful Hussars and Chevaulegers must be in an organic light cav brigade :)

Thanks Sam; I would assume that the reserve and organic cav brigades would include two large units and a horse btry? So, say two large hussar and a 6lb horse btry for an organic lt cav brigade for the infantry division.

I have a good question. You say that the avant-garde division have a large uhlan unit, but the austrian army only had four uhlan reg. Maibe is better Hussars (12 reg)or Chevauxlegers (7 reg).

Well, they only had about half a dozen Avant-Garde divisions, for that matter. Not every Korps had one. But it's my favorite!

You get the Hussar unit if you're the attacker in a scenario, and the Avant-Garde list is +1 to attack, so it's more likely that you'll have both.

Ok, but austrian army have 9 corps, each with an avant-garde or light division, only 1/3 of this division have posibily an Uhlan reg.

Oh, I know that the Avant-Garde divisions could have various types of cavalry attached (in one case, even a Cuirassier regiment), but I had to make a decision for play-balance purposes. If I let players "pick one" cavalry unit, then they'd just pick whichever they perceived as most advantageous in game terms, and then people would ask me why I'd bothered giving players the choice!

So I picked a unit type (Uhlans) who do appear often enough that it makes sense, but who could be augmented by Hussars, Dragoons, Cheveauxlegers, etc, by using the Support brigade choices.

And of course: if you want to play an historical scenario, that's a different matter. Then you go with whatever the historical OB says.
