The entrenchment rules on pg 75 say "If units are allowed to entrench ... Some army lists and scenarios might allow an army to begin the game with entrenchments ..."
A cursory look at the list shows that Opolcheniye and some Spanish units can begin the game in entrenchments.
So in a AB game who can entrench during a game - anyone, no-one, or only units that are allowed to be entrenched at the start of the game?

Which leaves me more confused - what has an engineer to do with the entrenchments section of pg 75?
I can see that p78 allows an engineer to build entrenchments, but p75 seems to allows any "units allowed to entrench" to build them as well.

Some units can begin a game entrenched (and therefore get free "trenches".
An engineer can, before the start of the game, build a predefined length of entrenchment (going from memory on this, it may be that they can only harden soft cover towns before the game, you'll need to check page 78).
OR
An engineer can build said entrenchments during the game. Same length, but a roll is required. If you succeed you get your length of entrenchment.
THEN
Take a unit(s) from your army and park them behind the entrenchment. I would prefer if it was your cavalry, but it is up to you.

An engineer builds a entrenchments as per pg 78 taking a 4+ engineering test. If he passes he places 6BW of linear fortifications.
But pg 75 provides a different test for a unit to entrench. This is a discipline test, adding +1 to the dice if you fail, don't move and try again the following player turn. If successful it places 1BW of trench immediately in front of its bases.
This suggests me to there are two ways of putting down trenches/linear fortifications.
I presume I have missed something - especially as a 3+ discipline test is easier to pass than a 4+ engineering test. The terrain table on p21 also says that entrenchments are hard cover but does not mention linear fortifications - are they the same?

Actually, you're both right.
As per p.75, if a scenario or army list says that you may entrench, then you may attempt to do so, with the DISC test, etc., etc.
And if you're playing a scenario that involves Engineers, that's one of the Engineering tasks they may perform.
So can any unit have the potential of building trenches or does the discipline matter, amature vs experienced or shaky vs reliable/valient? And I would guess that any trenches built during activity phases would be hasty fortifications thus soft cover and any that are built pre-deployment would be hard cover?
Only artillery units and INF in Line formation may entrench (p. 75), and it requires a Discipline test. So if your unit is Experienced, it will have a better chance of success than if it's Amateur.
Trenches provide Soft cover, as per the second paragraph of the rule (p.75.)
All armies get entrenchments (or rather, walls that count as hard cover obstacles). The attacker can place 6BW, and the defender can place 12BW.
