Has anyone done a French Revolutionary army list for Lasalle? I was interested in the earlier demi-brigade period where the old regiments and the volunteers fought side by side.
This is not a period I know much about. Based on superficial reading, an AB style army list for the Valmy period might be:
French Army List (1791-1794)
Infantry Division
3 Line Battalions (Rel/Ama/SK0/Linear Tactics)
6 Volunteer/National Guard Battalions (Unpred/Ama/Sk2)
1 Artillery battery (4 med Foot guns)
2 SK bases
+ on attack:
1 Line Battalion
1 Volunteer/National Guard Battalion
Organic Cavalry Brigade
3 Cavalry (Rel/Ama/Shock)
1 Hussar (Rel/Ama/Pursuit)
1 Horse Battery (3 med Horse guns)
Organic Dragoon Brigade
5 Dragoon (Rel/Ama)
1 Horse Battery (3 med Horse guns)
Organic Line Brigade (Valmy period)
6 Line Battalions (Rel/Ama/SK0/Linear Tactics)
1 Artillery battery (4 med Foot guns)
Organic Volunteer/National Guard Brigade (Valmy period)
1 Line Battalions (Rel/Ama/SK0/Linear Tactics)
4 Volunteer/National Guard Battalions (Unpred/Ama/Sk2)
1 Artillery battery (4 med Foot guns)
Organic Infantry Brigade (Demi-brigade period)
2 Line Battalions (Rel/Ama/SK0/Linear Tactics)
3 Volunteer/National Guard Battalions (Unpred/Ama/Sk2)
1 SK base
1 Artillery battery (4 med Foot guns)
Notes:
Line battalions are the old regiments. I have assumed they fought in the orthodox fashion (hence linear tactics) but that the loss of officers during the revolution made them Amateur. I have used SK0 so they have the same base skirmish ability of the Prussians and Austrians of the period - but there are SK bases that can be attached.
The Volunteer/National Guard are the new battalions added to the army. I have assumed Unpredictable will best match the on/off way that they performed. I have NOT used Linear Tactics to reflect their inability to fight in an orthodox fashion. I used SK2, which appears generous given SK1 would still be better than Prussian and Austrian line troops. But I felt these battalions should be able to create Irregular units which requires being SK2 or SK3. This allows these battalions to be broken down in skirmish bases and attached to other battalions or used as an irregular unit.
There are a couple of SK bases reflecting the grande bande approach to skirmishing.
I used a ratio of 1 line to 2 Volunteer/National Guard battalions to match the demi-brigade ratio, but in the Valmy period the ratio was not as fixed.
I have assumed the French cavalry were pretty bad in this period due to the loss of so many officers. Since most Prussian and Austrian cavalry are Valiant in this period, the French cavalry should be sufficient useless. There are two variants - a heavy cavalry one and a Dragoon one (made neither pursuit or shock).
I provided three versions of infantry support. For the earlier Valmy period one brigade that is entirely from old regiments and one that is mainly new battalions, and for the Demi-brigade period a mix of both types.
I made all support organic reflecting the mixed Divisions the French used (although I think Lasalle is a better game with ALL cavalry as reserve support).
Artillery was a French strength. I have used Conquest artillery ratings, but perhaps the French should have more (2x 3 gun batteries?) in this period so it is better than the Prussian and Austrian?
French officers use the normal French ratings, although that may be generous as many officers who turned out to be good were still learning their trade.
To size the army, I used my points system:
