A good fun game this evening which timed out, Russian Grenadiers defending v Avante Guarde and holding on by the skin of their teeth
We got talking about Russian Infantry.
I thought "HFA" was a straight choice for Russian Infantry but reading the RB again i think you still have to roll for it ie " ... choses to Defend AND IS DEFENDING .."
Any thoughts.

My reading is that an army that gets the HFA rule has to choose to defend and win the die roll (of course no die roll would be necessary if the opponent chose to attack). So a player that chose to attack and lost the die roll (so ends up as defender) would have forfeited the opportunity to use HFA. That is certainly what the words seem to say. Whether that was what was intended or not by Sam I don't know.
The only time I tried to use the HFA rule was with a Russian Grenadier Army when my opponent (Trev) pointed out that only Russian Infantry get the HFA rule not Russian Grenadiers - Doh!

The grenadiers don't get it, because they're assumed to be a unit that one uses to assault.

Hi Sam - but do you have to have "Chosen" to Defend in the first place? I read it like Alan that you do:

Sorry - don't mean to be pedantic but there is a nice little bit of (potential) subtlety in there if you meant the former (i.e. an army eligible for HFA won't _always_ be guaranteed to have it when defending) - so confirming if there is or isn't that qualification would be appreciated?

As Alan said, i think you have to chose to Defend and then win the dice roll unless your opponent choses to attack.
I hadn't considered the position if you opted to Attack and lost the roll-off. Thanks Mycenius!! ;)
