   Will try and do this one without ASCII art!

   Prussian cavalry unit charges to its front, contacting two French cavalry units.

   A third French cav unit, facing towards the Attacker at its point of contact counter-charges as a reaction and contacts the flank.

   My question is on the number of dice the Attacking unit receives against this flanking unit.

   With the position of the two frontal defenders in mind, it seemed to us that it would have half dice against each [and they both full against it], but how many [if any] would it have against the flanking unit?

   Remember that combat is resolved Per Defending Unit with the order of choice determined by the opposing players. So you choose one combat by pointing out a defending unit, resolve that combat against that defender, then your opponent chooses one, and so on.

   Thus in your example the answer is: "It depends on which defending unit is resolved first."

   If you choose that countercharging cavalry unit first, then it rolls against whatever attacking side unit it contacted in the flank. And that flanked attacker gets his dice halved, because presumably he's fighting an enemy that does not cover more than half of his front.

   Of course, the person who won the choice of first combat, might choose the Defender in the line, getting whomped by two attackers. In that case it's one defender rolling all his dice, versus the two attackers, who add their dice together. I'm not sure about that first attacker (is he halved for some reason?) but the second attacker is definitely halved because he's fighting two enemies at once (he has a Countercharging enemy Cav on his flank.)

   I may be misreading - but wasn't the example 1 Prussian unit that ended up charging 3 French units (2 that it charged, and 1 extra that countercharged).

   Process is presumably is the same - in this case you would fight a series of 1 on 1 fights between the one Prussian unit and each of the 3 French defending units (assuming after outcomes moves the Prussian unit remains in combat after each fight). There is a process for players to decide the order each French unit will fight. The Prussian unit probably has less dice in each fight.

   If it was the other way around, and 3 Prussian units charged 1 French unit, then you would have the uber dice-fest fighting all the units' dice together in one go.

   Ah yes, sorry, you're right.

   In any event, I think the misunderstanding stems from not resolving combat on a Per-Defender basis.
