   I am whipping up a scenario for Vimiero and I am wondering about what to do with the 8 little infantry brigades under the C in C (they weren't using a divisional structure like the French).

   As the army is under Wellington I am thinking of just having no subcommanders in the list and have the C in C as the only commander to represent the less offensive structure (and making the scenario fun for the French). Wellingtons high rating should be enough.

   Clearly giving them 8 subcommanders isn't the answer. Opinions?

   That battles interesting but no one was sure who was in command LOL

   Sir Arthur Wellesley’s plan was to swing his unengaged right flank forward across the road to Lisbon and the French Army would have been cut off from its base.
   Had Sir Arthur Wellesley been permitted to continue it seems that the French Army might have been compelled to surrender entirely.
   The ‘stop’ order had been given by Sir Harry Burrard, an officer senior to Wellesley, who had arrived from England and taken command.
   Follow-up: After the battle Junot asked for a capitulation on the terms that he and his army be repatriated to France.But Wellington had trapped him anyway. The 2 officers who had superceded Wellesley agreed to the terms and the French Army was transported by the British Fleet to France complete with the loot it had taken from Potrugal. There was outrage in Britain and the 3 senior officers involved, Dalrymple, Burrard and Wellesley were subjected to an enquiry.
   In the meantime command in Spain fell on Sir John Moore.
   In due course Wellesley was exonerated, but in the meantime Moore had fought the retreat to La Corunna and been killed

   That aside wellington did command the battle and he would of had a 2iC
   so I would have wellington and a 2ic myself. That is I would stick to the lassalle command rules

   Wellington commanded most of the actual engagement I believe so we can stick with that.

   So the problem is who is the other commander (Hill seems like the logical choice as he and Anstruther are off on the right who were unengaged as you say).

   There are 8 commanders on the British side but that is clearly too many. Perhaps your idea of an unnamed second commander might work.

   I am curious as to what Sam has to say as the example in the book indicates that I should use all of the commanders but it wouldn't make for a very good game.

   A General Order of 21st August, issued after the battle of Vimeiro, assigned the two companies of the 1/95th to the 6th Brigade and assigned one company 5/60th Regt each to the 7th and 8th Brigades, thus leaving only three companies with the 6th Brigade. On 21 August, Colonel John Harding arrived to command the artillery. A General Order of 22nd August transferred the 97th Regiment to the 8th Brigade.

   On 22 August, Lieutenant General Dalrymple arrived and assumed command of the army. He immediately agreed to a suspension of hostilities and began to negotiate a convention for the withdrawal of French forces from Portugal, The Convention of Cintra. This was signed on the 29/30August. Also, on the 22nd, Dalrymple assigned most of the Vimeiro Corps to Wellesley's command and the recently arrived reinforcements, with perhaps Acland's and Anstruther's Brigades to Moore's command. Brigadier General C. Stewart arrived 23/24 August.

   Thanks for your input on this - and yes using the 2ic for another commander is a really good idea - one commander for 15 units is way too much.

   I'll take this info as I move forward - thanks again

   Tod,

   You could always give command of Wellington and the full eight subcommanders to me. Although that might make the game a bit of a walkover for the French. ;-)

   You never know I just might win, but that would spoil my record.

   Interesting battle Vimiero good size for lassalle. Lots of hilly terrein Its the first time wellington used battalions lying down hidden behind crest of hills causing the french to march by them. A tactic he used many times after that. I think the french will have a better chance on the table than real life because of that.unless u wanted to build in some ambush rule into the scenerio. Anyway let me know how your getting on.
