I'm painting a Marlburian Anglo-Dutch coalition army for the WSS. I chose it mainly because most of my friends were choosing the other ones: French, Spanish, Italian states, Saxons/Poles, Turks, etc.
But then I fell in love with all the crazy-colorful units in that army: the Danish guards in bright yellow... the Osnabrück Leib regiment in apple green... the Hessians in various blues and greys... the Dutch guards in blue and orange... and so on. So I decided to just paint up my favorite coalition units.
Were they ever all together at the same battle? I have no idea, but I doubt it. Were they in fact all historical? Yes. On the same side in the same war? Yes. (In fact, I stopped myself from doing a unit of brilliantly-colored Cologne infantry, because they were on the other side.)
So I ended up with an army that's *mostly* historical - at least they certainly *could* have all fought together under Marlborough at some point in the WSS. But I've deliberately selected the prettiest and most fun-to-paint units, for my own pleasure.
(And my glorious white-and-red Nassau cavalry is thus far invincible.)
