You know im a bit worried about you Aucklander's and how you are playing this game, what with the diddling and runnig cav backwards at the enemy ;)
What? You mean the horses go the other way round?! :-o
I wasn't going to ask "why were/how did those cavalry get into that position anyways" question as I didn't want to embarrass the poor chap .....
As Mike says see the Hundred Days Battle Report here:

Essentially (and this might be a bit of a novel but) what happened is Cam crunched my right flank - he had 4 battalions with his Foot Battery in support bearing down on my sole battalion (the East Essex boys), plus the potential one of those was going to chase away my out-gunned foot battery as well, leaving the Essex boys isolated. Luckily my cavalry arrived so they were deployed outside the Essex chaps to prevent Cam mobbing them with 3-4 battalions, it worked as Cam immediately stopped his 2 left-most battalions and formed square with the inside one, while (somewhat cheekily IMO) deploying his Foot Bty out in front. There was no downside to me charging his Bty, but one if I didn't. So the 3rd KGL Hussars charged the guns (see Large Image 9) and made them evade (off to Cam's right towards his centre), where they then redeployed facing to Cam's left to fire on the flank of the Hussars if they didn't retire. The Brunswick Hussars remained back as the reserve/cover.
-
In fact what changed everything was Cam smashed into the Essex boys with 2 Attack Columns and in the first combat of the game blew that completely fresh battalion off the table! This meant my Bty would have to depart the hill pronto, leaving the Cav completely isolated out on my right (at this time I also had my Horse Bty ride left like the wind too, as it would not be able to safely survive more than 1 more turn on the right with Cam's numbers... So the Brunswick Hussars wheeled left to threaten the 2 Attack Columns that had trounced the Essex (and hopefully delay them) so the 79th Cameron's who had marched like mad from the left flank could get on the hill and secure the British right flank (which reminds me, OT, of another little query about bent march columns). Anyway See Large Image 10 which is the point where the 2 German Hussar units are about to get (unintentionally) sucked into the middle of the French rear...
-
At this point "There's No Downside, you might as well have a go" Mike (ala DaKiwiMike) talked Cam into having his artillery stand and shoot at the 3KGL instead of evading! Madness, and very un-Cam like! :-) Needless to say I expected him to evade again off into the centre and I could fall back to threaten his Infantry again - instead his fire put 1 DISR on me (+1 from the previous charge) + 1 for this charge - I nuked his Bty but then was left with blown horses, etc, and stranded on 3 DISR trying to rally/recover. I chose not to move the 3 KGL for the next 2-3 turns while I tried to rally off some of the DISRs (in fact I only got 1 off on the second or third attempt).
-
So I was stuck with the 3rd KGL blown behind the middle of Cam's force, and with my "I'm with Stupid" C-in-C's 4BW command range the Brunswick Hussars had to stay within ~9BW or less of the KGL chaps. You can see this in Large Image 11. My original plan was to rally a DISR off the KGL (remaining stationary to help it) then have both units ride off into Cam's rear to get away from his muskets, so I coudl about face near the wood and threaten the rear of his units in combat with my Centre. But the 3rd KGL struggled to rally and I then developed some forward momentum in my centre against Cam's right sooner than expected, which gave the opportunity to throw the (at that time completely fresh) Brunswickers in to support the 42nd Highlanders (see Large Image 14). I won the less likely Inf v. Inf combat next to the wood (the North Gloucestershire's destroying Cam's Btn relatively quickly) but not the more likely Inf + Cav v. Inf one involving the Brunswickers! As Mike commented in the Game Report Thread and above, Cam's "Super Battalion", throwing about 3D in both combats beat off my Highlanders + Hussars throwing 15D (1st Combat), then I think 10D (2nd Combat) - inconceivable - and to rub it in my Hussars bounced a long way back! And that's how things pretty much then ended up how they did...
-
If you look at Large Image 14 (end of Turn 14, the first Brunswick Charge) and imagine both Cam's Btns in the centre being broken in Cam's following turn then I would have turned his right flank, my 2 Cav could about face, and would be supported by no less than 4 Inf units + my Foot Bty against his 5 Inf isolated on his left and unable to be supported by his own Cav... Basically that would have probably decided things on that flank IMO (or at least ground it to a stalemate)...
-
Instead I bounced (Large Image 15), Went back in at not so good odds as above (Large Image 16) - where you can also see my other Inf already turning Cam's flank from the loss of his other Btn and coming to the 3KGL's support (who have finally rallied off a DISR so will do an about face manoeuvre next turn) - In turn 17 therefore the Brunswickers only ended up where they were because of a second failed combat that should have seen Cam's unit ridden down with semi-relative ease! Instead the bounced (again), the Cameron Highlanders on the right (at table-edge) succumbed to 4 DISRs (Large Iamge 17), and the Brunswickers got mobbed by French Infantry in line (Large Image 18)!

Phew, hopefully that makes some sense and at least shows I wasn't being totally incompetent! ;-)
