I am finding the Hougomont scenario quite a compelling scenario to work on. Lot on the web and have even bought a couple of books Paget & Saunders small treatise on Hougomont, as well as "The Waterloo Companion".
The critical parts of the battle appear to be from about 11am to 3pm and after some thought, I have come up with this preliminary OB. It of course does not have the units involved, but I am hoping it will give a fairly balanced scenario based on history.
There are probably too many irregular units in the OB, but most of the terrain is quite irregular especially for the defenders, so maybe it will be ok. Still trying to decide whether to use 2 battalion equivalent units of light british guard companies or 1 (1 is much more accurate to the Historical OB), and maybe some or all of the 1e legere regiment should be irregular as well.
The recent posts on irregular units and obstacles have given me some ideas, especially in respect to the terrain rules. I am still having real difficulty envisioning the Hougomont complex and orchard as a series of BUA's , and really feel more comfortable with it being a series of terrain features. It is just that the Hougomont complex (from Hovels that is) is really too large, being 18 BW's in it's longest dimension (6 BUA's)
Maybe the scenario would work if all, the wood south of the complex and the orchard and complex itself are graded as rough terrain. But this makes it very difficult for formed units to fire, have to think about this a bit more. i also think the walls should be classed as obstacles. Maybe the walls of the chateau itself should be impregnable aside from the gates. The walls of the garden and the south wall of the orchard could be crossed but are hard cover. Still think about the terrain, sure would like an extra foot of depth.
I must say that this exercise has made me read the rulebook repeatedly and the posts of the members of the group have really been quite useful. Great members and forum.
Of course still have not got artillery sorted, but I will leave that to last. It did appear to play quite an important part in the battle and I would like to have it as an element of the scenario.
Thanks,
John
