This is definitely a newbie question - from what I've read the Austrian Reserve forces are comprised of the Grenadier companies taken from the regular line regiments and each would therefore retain the facing colours of their 'parent' regiments.
Have I understood this correctly or should I go stand in the corner with the dunce's hat on?

You are correct in assuming the facings would differ, so 3 colours over 4 bases. (3 base Shako units do have some advantages!)
The thing I found difficult to determine was what standards to use, I found this on the Warflag site.
"Nevertheless, aside from 1805, the Grenadier battalions which only formed up in wartime just picked up one spare Ordinarfahne, usually but not necessarily from the senior parent regiment depot. Only in 1805, when each regiment had its own Grenadier battalion as the senior unit did Grenadiers carry a Leibfahne."

I would say that is very good question indeed... depends on the date you are representing, initially each company retained their parent regiment facing, but lately (1809?-1811?) the they where regulated to be all the same.
