............I think you are being a little to rigid in interpretation of the AB. Remember that this is for AB games not historical scenarios.
So, lets say I want to field an infantry division. In that case, the 4 infantry and 1 elite would all be line battalions? If I wanted to field a light division, then the 1 elite infantry and 1 infantry would both be light battalions?
...............Not necessarily to either, you could put a light battalion in the core infantry list, but most of would not as we are trying to micmic historical OOB. an example being, I believe the Highland light 71st were in the 1st division (guards). In the Light division most of us would just put light battalions: 52nd x2 (1 large), 43rd, cacadores and rifles.
I guess the difficulty I am having is translating real world OOB's into game mechanics using the AB. If a OOB references line regiments and light regiments, how would I go about depicting them in game terms? Or do people not go into that much specificity?
..............Remember that light or line has no effect on game mechanics, but the esprit level does, so valiant are more likely rifles, highland etc. Although I believe in Advanced rules light battalions can be made irregular or can undergo the half battalion rule.
So, let's say I came up the the following units based on some of the regiments for British in Vimeiro. Am I understanding this correctly:
1st Brigade - this would be one GAME DIVISION that is an INFANTRY DIVISION with the Defend+1
Major General Rowland Hill
* 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment of Foot (Royal Northumberland Fusiliers)(944) - LARGE
* 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment of Foot (Royal Norfolk)(761) - SMALL
* 1st Battalion, 38th Regiment of Foot (1st Staffordshire) (953) - LARGE
2nd Brigade - Another INFANTRY DIVISION in game terms
Major General Ronald Craufurd Fergusson
* 36th Regiment of Foot (Herefordshire) (591) - SMALL
* 1st Battalion, 40th Regiment of Foot (2nd Somersetshire)(923)- LARGE
* 1st Battalion, 71st Regiment of Foot (Glasgow) (935)- LARGE - ELITE
.............if you are referring to the Peninsula Core Infantry Division there would be 6x4 base infantry units and 1x6 base (large) infantry units, this would be broken into 2 brigades with 1 overall commander (major general) and 2 sub-commanders (bde generals). So you are down 1 infantry battalion and have too many (3) large battalions in your OOB. Again this is according to the AB, you can do want you want in historical scenarios.
7th Brigade - A LIGHT DIVISION in game terms, because there are light infantry units present?
Brigadier General Robert Anstruther
* 2nd Battalion, 9th Regiment of Foot (Royal Norfolk) - SMALL
* 2nd Battalion, 43rd Light Infantry (Monmouthshire) (721) - SMALL
* 2nd Battalion, 52nd Light Infantry (Oxfordshire) (654) - SMALL
* 2nd Battalion, 97th Regiment of Foot (695) - SMALL
..................In the British OOB the light division was a small division with 2 bdes, in the AB it is 3x4 base infantry units, 1 large infantry elite battalion, 1 large rifle battalion and 2 cacadore battalions. So an historical OOB that micmics the Lasalle AB would be as follows:
6 base 1/95th rifles
6 base 1/52nd light
4 base 2/52nd, 1/43rd, 1st cacadores, 3rd cacadores, and 1 other 4 base battalion ? 3/95, 5/60th or 1/71st (if you just want historical light units)
I hope this helps.
I recently went through this exercise on my blog. See:
