Our group played two SYW games of Maurice side-by side; One (mine) was British v French, and the other Prussians v Austrians. In each game, we had one player who had read the rules and lead the opposing side through the game sequence.
We were using our Might and Reason armies, which were based 2"x1" deep; our concession to Maurice was to treat each M&R base as two bases in Maurice. This meant that 1BW=1", and that we could use normal tape measures for measuring. Column formation was indicated by putting the bases in short edge contact with each other, the bases facing in opposite directions to distinguish it from line formation. The head of the column would be the base with the command figures on it. The only quirk in the game was that artillery units were then twice the width they should have been.
It took awhile for some of us to get used to the turn sequence, but everyone quickly became accustomed to the choices available. The most confusing thing for my opponent was recognizing that if he chose a command choice and drew a card (or cards) he could not play an event card. In my game, we had great fun agonizing over whether to use some choice cards for activation, or as a modifying card. Also fun was choosing whether to try and rally those battered regiments, or march the cavalry around the flank to get into position to charge or...
Musketry and cannister proved devastating, and my opponent became very good at timing his charges at just the right moment when my troops were about to break. On the other table, the Austrians who had not read the rules found that they let their forces become fragmented and therefore harder to command in any kind of coordinated way. If I understood correctly, they conceded the game before their army broke because they found it difficult to do anything. Almost all of us enjoyed the rules thoroughly and are looking forward to collecting and painting armies for another period. I'm not sure if it's going to be GNW, AWI, WSS, or what.
Sam, this looks like Maurice will be another magnum opus of yours! Thanks!
