We had Comp-conditions Lasalle Day here in Oz 10 games played to a time limit of 3.5 hrs. Boards were pre-setup. Pls note most players had no or very limited game experience before the comp.
Observations..
• Round 1 only two completed games with the others “draws” after a generous 3.5hrs…(but one player was unlucky as his opponent kept making his army morale check even with one dice less for being under 50%) ….Setup (post deployment ready to commence) complete after 1 hr in most cases
• Round 2 all games finished before time…with all games with decisive results…setup now down to 45min
• Players played more aggressively round 2 …less hesistant…churned thru turns faster or threw in more attacks
• The rules had very few rules questions the cav charging in woods controversy probably the biggest.
• Games played on average to 14 turns …in both rounds tho we did have decisive results by turn 11/12 in three cases in round 2
Results on Sum7...(appended at bottom) A= Attacker won D= Defender won
6-1 (4)…ADAA
5-2 (5)…D*D*DAA
4-3 (1)…D
D*..essentially upgraded draws.
Results on Sam System A= Attacker won D= Defender won
DecWin …4 ADAA
MargWin 3 DAA
Draw ………3
Big difference between the systems lies in the draws being upgraded to effective Marginal Wins under the SUM7 system as it reflects the Attacker failing to get to grips with defender…ie the system punishes puny attackers(we had two games like this in round 1)….I’m happy with this or owise a defender is penalized in a comp…I prefer the timid attacker is the one penalized. I think the more aggressive players will be drawn to attack armies and passive players to defender style armies which works well with the Sum7 biases… just unsure if the bias is too much to the defender…however the stats show the total points is pretty even
Sum of Attackers points= 28
Sum of Defenders points= 25
Points at end of Day 1 using SUM7 (DR=draw..MW marginal Win…DW decisiveWin..Sam system)

On Armies …
The system bares out what I too have found …the Brits are Brittle(pun intened!!) and hard to play for novices…(results are as per Sam system)
Brits …………3 losses 1 draw
Spanish ……2 losses 1 DecWin
Austrians …..1 draw (unlucky should have won)
Russian Gd…. 1xDraw(thus loss under Sams rules) 1xDecWin
SUM7 Vp system

5.........2......Loser inflicts >20% losses on winner
4.........3......Loser inflicts >=33% losses on winner
• If you win but the loser has more pursuit cav than you then downgrade your victory by one level to a minimum of 4-3 …
• Guards must win or are automatic 1-6 losers
