Wanted to ask what people used for painting French blue, and green? Was looking at putting in a order for some more Vallajo paints and was pondering just what blue and green to use.
Painting question regarding french blue and green.

Hi!
I'm still sorting out my greens but for French dark indigo blue I like to use a 2:1 mixture of 899 Dark Prussian Blue and 965 Prussian blue for my 15mm figures.
Dark Prussian Blue is an excellent 'purpleish' blue but is too dark for small figures. The Prussian Blue component lightens the Dark Prussian Blue but still maintains the original hue.
I should point out that I use this over a fairly light grey primer coat as opposed
to the more common black so results may vary.Napoleonic colours a constant source of debate on The Miniature Page forums! Check them out for more suggestions!

p.s. the 899/965 mixture is intended as a base coat. You can add more Prussian Blue (and eventually white) for highlights and use straight Dark Prussian Blue for shadows. If you don't do that sort of thing then you may want go with a 1:1 mix instead.

Hi,
Well in 6mm I had to go for a lighter shade of the blue. I ended up mixing (Sorry can't remember the ratio's) Vallejo Light Blue, Vallajo Dark Prussian Blue and Vallejo Prussian Blue. Now I have a ;arge pot more than enough for my French.
Anyway that was advise for the 6mm guys out there, onto your question. I have been recommended Dark Prussian Blue as the base, and Prussian Blue as the top coat.
I recently did some 28mm Perry's like this and added a little bit of Light blue to the Prussian Blue as a final layer.
What is the green for? Vallejo Light Green for the Pom Poms

Hi Russell,
Black Undercoat, Light Dry Brush, Intense Blue.
For Green try either Medium Olive or Deep green depending on what sort of green you fancy.
Anything darker or staright on the back and it wil just soak up the colours in 6mm, remeber its 6mm so be bold.
Cheers Rex

Black Undercoat...then dry brush the fig off white...then block in w/ Vallejo Dark Prussian Blue then drybrush Vallejo Prussian Blue...
The uniform plates that i have show a very dark blue for the French...lots of debate on how they actually looked in the field....go to The Miniatures Page and search "French Blue" for threads on various opinions on the subject...

Excellent advise, thank you all. My first batch of French have always bothered me because of how bright the coats turned out. This batch will come out much better. Hope you all had a great Christmass and best of dice to ya in the comming New Year!

Hey everyone, if you don't mind my jumping on Mike's pigment pondering bandwagon, what Vallejo Colors do you recommend for painting Russian Green? (By the way, mfarl and I are both painting in 15/18mm scale). I haven't painted Napoleonic Russians in a long time; over twelve years ago. I know some sources say the green should be almost black, but I would prefer that I could tell the troops were wearing green. I was thinking of using Ceramcoat Leaf Green, followed up by a heavy wash of Hunter (dark) green. Has anyone tried anything like this?
Cheers all,
