Please Assist in Creating First Army List

I am a bit confused about making an army. My book is on order (or will be soon), but I have a chance to pick up figures this weekend (Jan 16). I have read the pdfs available on army lists and the FAQ.

While I plan to do a French army, I'd like to use the Prussian army list (available on the site) as an example for making an army.

I chose the Hundred Days theatre and 1 support choice.
This means my force includes
1 Commander (at least 1 figure)
1 Sub-commander (at least 1 figure)
2 Skirmisher bases (6 figures on 2 bases)
1 Foot BTY (3 cannons + crew on 3 bases) (do I get a howitzer for an additional gun + crew?)
1 Infantry Abteilung
3 Infantry (12 figures on 4 bases)x3
3 Landwehr (12 figures on 4 bases)x3
1 Heavy BTY (3 cannons + crew on 3 bases) (do I get a howitzer for an additional gun + crew?)

Have I read army list correctly and included the correct units?
Is the figure count correct?
I end up with an all infantry or all cavalry force with this army list. Is that intended by design?
If playing without support choices then the Prussian force is only 1 unit!?! Have I missed something major?

Is this force capable of at least holding its own against a Major Power force? It seems small.

For the Prussian, yes you get an additional base of howitzer.

Figure count is what I am going with. Sam's pictures for infantry show double deep basing, so 8 infantry per stand. Again, I am going with 3 or 4 per stand and will probably go 15mm or 20mm deep so that I can double depth base in the future when I have more painted up.

You should not end up with an all cavalry force with the list (Prussians) Your core force includes one mounted unit of Landwehr cavalry. Your base force includes all of the units listed in the large rectangle at the top of the page you are looking at. I believe you get line infantry, reserve infantry, Landwehr infantry, one Landwehr cavalary, 2 infantry skirmish bases and one 3 cannon/1 howitzer artillery unit. If you attack you get two more infantry units. I don't have the list in front of me but the core is actually quite good in number. It holds up well as you get one more artillery piece than most nations.

You get the following as your core:

2 Infantry
3 Reserve
2 Landwehr
1 Landwehr Cav
2 SK bases
1 Foot BTY

If attacking, add the following
1 Reserve
1 Landwehr

I think your confusion is that you get the same units whether you are in the Liberation or 100 Days.

I believe there is no specific figure count in Lasalle (thus the beauty of the rules), there are either 4 or 6 bases for regular and large size units respectively. In the Prussian core list, all the units are 4 bases in size. All Prussian artillery units appear to be 3 cannon and 1 howitizer.

The problem with the Prussians will be the Landwehr cavalry, in my opinion. But, you will outnumber many of your opponents with cavalry and if you support your better cavalry units with the Landwehr, they can be very useful. Also, not a bad idea to leave one Landwehr Cavalry unit with your artillery as I learned the hard way! lol

Landwehr infantry will be hit or miss depending on your roll for keep in mind that you get a +1 when rolling for their vigor and tactics which I think I forgot about in my first game with the Prussians.

Just to be confusing - the Prussian army list on the website is not the same as in the book. In the book you actually get only 2 Reserve infantry units - not 3 as shown in the PDF. Must be a cunning ploy by Sam to check who actually has the book!

Ah crud, my Prussians may be weaker?! Didn't seem to matter to the French opponent who attacked us... We were soundly trounced! (or was it a clever ploy to allow the newer player to win? yeah, that's it! lol)

vonGottschall is right and as I'm doing the same I can help a little. :)

So it works out to be as below. Note, I'm using bases so you can get the number of figs by using your own figs per base value. The items starting with a * are if you are the attacker:

2 Infantry - 8 bases of Prussian infantry + 4 Skirmish bases
2 Reserve - 8 bases of Prussian infantry + 4 Skirmish bases
2 Landwehr - 8 bases of Landwehr style infantry + 2 Skirmish bases
1 Landwehr Cav - 4 bases of Landwehr Cav
2 SK bases - 2 Skirmish bases
1 Foot BTY - 3 cannons and 1 howitzer
1 C-in-C - 1 commander base
1 sub commander - 1 commander base
*1 sub commander - 1 commander base
*1 Reserve - 4 bases of Prussian infantry + 2 Skirmish bases
*1 Landwehr - 4 bases of Landwehr style infantry + 1 Skirmish bases

Plus you likely would need at least one support brigade. If the light Cav fr example that would add the below (as an example so you can work out the others):

1 sub commander - 1 commander base
2 Landwehr Cav - 8 bases of Landwehr Cav
1 Hussar - 4 bases of Hussars
1 Dragoon - 4 bases of Dragoons
1 horse Bat - 3 cannons and 1 howitzer

There are a couple of differences between the web and the book.

One cam_millar pointed out is the 2 vs 3 reserve units. The other is that in the 100 days list the reserve units become experienced.

Thus the 100 days core list is thus better than the liberation, but in the liberation period you has the option of an elite infantry support brigade.

A friend of mine uses Prussians in the 100 day period and he doesn't seem to be having any difficulties in winning

Yes, Prussians can perform well if you used properly... First outing for me so still learning the rules. Any time you can have more units than your opponent, you should be able to find a way to win even if they are not to the quality of the opposition on a unit by unit basis. I only commanded the cavalry wing in the battle and my wing performed well. The only real mistake I made was in not keeping a Landwehr cavalry unit in reserve. I was able to hold up my opponents cavalry wing, hold up a a portion of his main attack and delay their main thrust. We didn't deploy well, nor did we use the terrain to our advantage. Also, we had the option of going the narrow edge of the table and should have done so. We played on a 6X4 foot table and this is too big for the core and one support we used, in my opinion. As the defenders, we should have contracted our frontage and forced the enemy to our terms, but such is war! lol As Sam as stated before, you had better have some reserves handy to feed in. Because we didn't, we couldn't take advantage of where we did well or where we needed help. Ah well, the best learned lessons are the hard ones.

i think 6x4 is fine especially if you use the terrain/set up rules. It also gives cavalry the room to manoeuvre and the opportunity for Brigades to separate (where appropriate)
