Instead of a recovery test as per the rules (straight discipline test, no modifiers), how about what we have erroneously been doing - count 6s on the dice rolls only. If that's too severe, how about 5s or 6s for experienced, 6s for amateurs and irregulars?
Proposed Iron Man optional recovery test rule

Well, at least on our group we'd probably stay with the rules as they are. Recovery chance not being that low it means that many times units choose to try to recover and in those cases you cannot maneuver ( not even wheel , as that is in fact a maneuver ). As a result only unengaged units far from the action really recover. Units in the combat usually can't recover since they always have to do something else, and if they are about to die, then they try to recover but they loose tactical importance. That is at least our view.
An interesting point is that formation changes are not maneuvers as defined by the book, and recovery says the unit cannot maneuver, but it seems it is possible to try to recover if you change formation ( we've been playing it like that ). We rationalize this with the idea that fixing your lines can be done when you are changing your formation as well...
I guess your games are probably much faster than ours with the way you guys were playing...

plus only one recovery possible per unit is not all that much.

also note that a unit canot do any manueveres in order to be able to have a recovery attempt...manuevres include wheels/obliques ... so unless you sit or move directly fwd you dont recover.... Nicks proposal would make recovery almost impossible ( 1/36 chance for 2x6, 1 in 316 for 3x6s)
I actually think the current recovery system is the most innovative/interesting aspect of the game...

We've had several occasions where on 2 dice, a unit has made a recovery roll using 6s only; I know it's not likely to happen at all for 3 dice - hence the tag "iron man optional" rule. It forces the players to be a bit more careful, plan things a little more, and when wanting to bring a unit out of harm's way to recover, you really do have to do so.
I certainly don't see this as a replacement official rule, just an optional rule for games where recovery isn't as likely an option.
