Under the rules for Austrian Mass it states that a unit in Mass gets a +2 mod vs Cavalry. Are they then halved because they're not in square? If so, it seems a rather useless formation to have been used so extensively (especially against the Turks).
For example: a 4-base Austrian Bn in mass attacked by a 4-base unit of Reliable cavalry.
Austrians get 8 dice +2 (10), halved for not being in square - 5 dice
Cavalry get 8 dice.
Result, mass only 1 die better than line. Either way infantry
not likely to hold.
Now if Mass not halved. the picture looks like this;
Infantry Dice Cavalry Dice
Mass 10 8
Square 8 4
line, etc. 4 8
Note that I purposely left out different quality and Disruption levels, focusing solely on the formation.
Thanks in advance.
