Looking forward to the Saxon lists, so I can finalise my order of AB figures.
Have started getting some infantry units painted, but am now clueless as to where to go next. still not long till february :)

Yeah, I'm going to try to get that done in the next couple of weeks.
I'm also looking forward to seeing the Saxon list.
I hope it will include the Schutzen battalions and large line battalions formed for the later part of the 1809 campaign against Austria.
It would be interesting to have large infantry units other than Austrian.
Hm; I'd be interested in seeing some information on that. Because the figures I've seen for the IX Corps in 1809 show the Saxon infantry to be slightly understrength, even at the start of the campaign.
In April 1809, for instance, the two BNs of the Prinz Max regiment have only 1092 men between them. The two BNs of Prinz Friedrich have only 1080; the two BNs of Prinz Anton have only 1033, and so on.
The average Saxon infantry BN in 1809 appears to be only about 515 men. The same goes for the Grenadiers. The 1st BN has 540 men; the second has 483 men, etc.
(These figures are from Jack Gill's 1809 trilogy, 1st Volume.)
Indeed, because of the low numbers two battalions were combined to form a single large battalion.
From John Gill's With Eagles to Glory:-
On 8 May 1809 Bernadotte consolidated the Schutzen of each brigade into two provisional Schutzen battalions under von Metzsch and von Egidy. Each battation was composed of four companies of about 540-560 officers and men.(Later increased in size to ~700)
The infantry battalions created new 40 man Schutzen detachments.
Bernadotte obtained permission to combine the two understrength battalions of each regiment into one large battalion of 24 officers and 950 to 970 NCOs and men.
Bernadotte's order was put into effect on 10 June 1809 by incorporating the soldiers of each 2nd battalion company into the like-numbered company of each 1st battalion. Similarly, the two separate line infantry battalions I/Dyherrn and II/Oebschelwitz were amalgamated into a single battalion. The excess personnel, chiefly officers and NCOs were sent back to Saxony to serve as cadre for the formation and training of new units.
The two combined battalions of the Guard grenadiers would still be a normal sized unit.
Given the lack of Saxon horse artillery. 2 small light and 2 small heavy cavalry units without artillery might be a reasonable cavalry support in 1809.
The performance of the 2 Schutzen battalions in 1809 would warrent at least Rel/Exp/SK2
Ah, I see what you're saying.
Yeah, that's a tough call, though, because you've got the example of a mid-campaign reorganization that only applies to one part of one campaign in one theatre. By contrast, we have the "standard" battalion of @500-600 men being used at the outset of the campaign, and then again in Russia in 1812.
So I probably won't use the mid-1809 amalgamation as a "standard" unit size, as it seems to be the exception, not the norm.
Yes, the large battalions are exceptional in that sense. It just happens to be the organisation for the only battle in 1809 you could really field a Saxon army.
No problem either way.
I'll just have to convince the people I play with
4 Large Line Infantry
1 Grenadier
1 Schutzen Rel/Exp/SK2
4 gun battery
plus 1 Grenadier and 1 large Line as attacker
supported by Saxon Cav (2 small light, 2 small heavy), French Infantry, French Light Cav
is reasonably balanced against the other lists.
Best regards,
Nigel
As a Saxonophile I look forward to this list as well..
And they're here.
Sneaky. ;)
Love that Saxon cavalry brigade!
very sneaky missed the arrival and the page gone screwy :(
And 1813?
Well, I suspect the 1813 Saxon Army won't have too mant friends! So, based on von Zeschau Saxon 24th Division in Reynier's VII Corps.
2 x Light battalions Reliabel/Experienced/SK2
2 x Grenadier battalions Reliable/Amateur/SK1
4 x Line battlaions Shaky/Experience/SK2
1 x Medium battery
1 x Heavy battery
Saxon jager Company (represented by 1 extra Skirmish stand)
Support
26th Saxon Light Cavalary brigade
1 x Ulhan Reliable/Experienced/Pursuit/Lance
1 x Saxon Hussar Reliable/Experienced/Pursuit
2 x Saxon horse Artillery
OR
Brigade Lessing
2 x Cuirassier Valiant/Experienced/Shock
1 x Saxon horse Artillery
And of course, once each game, the oppent gets to roll 1D6. On 1 or 2 Army wuill not move for one turn. on 5 or 6 the entire army defects. (semi-seriously)
Thoughts?
