   According to p 50, regulars can't shoot in woods, because of the cover. We had a situation last night where a regular unit were caught in the woods by cavalry charging them, and since they couldn't form square and falling back wasn't really an option, the player wanted to shoot at the oncoming enemy. We allowed it on the spot, since the charging cavalry were in base to base contact with the regular infantry (not that it did them much goo. Hah!), but we wanted an official opinion - can regulars in woods shoot if in base to base contact, where there aren't really many trees in between each unit, or is the "no shooting in woods" rule sacrosanct, and they can't do it under any circumstances?

   (Note, we know that irregulars can shoot, we're only talking about regulars who are fully in the woods).

   Well, the intent is that they can't shoot *through* woods.

   If they're at the edge of woods, though, and got charged by somebody from outside, then Yes, they can charge.

   But if they're well in the woods, and so is the Cavalry.... then No.

   Since regular "shooting" is assumed to be musketry volleys, they just can't form up enough in the woods to deliver an effective fire.

   Cheers Sam. Like I said, in practice, even though we allowed them to shoot, it didn't do them any good. :)

   This is an interesting concept that I understood ( I believe :) ) when Sam answered an earlier question of mine. An interesting result is that if you have troops in irregular formation ( skirmishers ) inside the woods ( ie not at the edge), they can fire out ( to the full 4BW ) but they cannot be shot at by troops in regular formation outside of the woods, you need to go and charge them.

   This makes woods with skirmishers very dangerous :)

   It also means regular infantry troops should avoid woods unless there is a very good reason not too - as Nick's Cav showed me. :)

   So, just to be clear:

   Two regular infantry units, both completely in the woods, can not shoot at one another when in base to base contact.

   I think the system works well though id be tempted to give units with a higer SK rating a bonus in woods. LFS takes this approach.

   Just more detail though i suppose.

    Further on this point, I can see not allowing a volley by regulars instead of having a modifier -1 for both in cover and target in cover, ending up needing 6s so just don't bother (and then saying the modifier is for either/or, or both), but I wonder about battles in heavily wooded terrain without troops that can go irregular (I'm thinking in terms of the entire board being wooded with the occasional clearing). Has anybody tried a scenario rule allowing them half dice, or to hit on 6s or both? While I'm at it, why don't irregulars get a penalty to hit troops in cover?
