I have mentioned this in the past to Sam but my question is this (maybe Sam would like a poll)
1) Would you play in a one day tourney at Cold Wars, Historicon or Fall In?
2) 15mm or 28mm (assuming you can use the recommended basing in the rules)
I would be interested for Cold Wars next year myself in 28mm although I could swing 15s by borrowing from a friend.
I would seriously consider playing in a one day Lasalle tourney, if I could attend one of those conventions. I might be going to Historicon this year.
I'm working on a 28mm army. Would the basing for 28mm be 50mm or 40mm?
Would the standard 4x6 tables be used, and if so, perhaps the 40mm makes more sense?
If there was a one day tourney at Historicon this year, that would certainly give me a target to get my army painted. The question would be whether or not it would just be using the basic army lists or adding a support choice as well?
I do 40mm but enough people to 2" that I would suggest that as a standard and just use spacers/ sabots for my basing.
I can't speak for Historicon as I can't go this year (the economy keeps me to one out of town con a year).

If there was on 15mm tournament on the Saturday of Cold Wars 2011, accommodating 40mm wide base widths on 6' x 4' tables, I would play in it. It would be especially interesting if it allowed for 2 support choices.
I would readily support a 15mm event at Historicon this summer. Having run the Flames of War tournaments at HMGS-East events for the past several years, I'm off the hook as Nationals for FoW is at H-con. Lasalle has caught on with our group of gamers (I-95 Gamers) and I believe we'd probably get 3-4 players for a tournament event. Having mats, hills and forest for about 30 tables for our events, I think we could probably swing bringing up much of what we'd need for tables.

Hey Joe - I have played in your Flames of War tournies in the past and really enjoyed them. BTW what do you use as a base material for your mats - we want to do the same sort of thing up here.
I won't be at Historicon or Fall In this year but if you wanted to link up on a time with no conflicts with FOW for Cold Wars next year that would be great. I think if we use your stuff we are talking a 15mm event then (I can swing either).

I knew I recognized your name and suspected it was from the FoW events. For our mats, we go to Home Depot and buy the mat you lay down under stone sidewalk or other garden projects to keep the grass from growing or unwanted stuff from wandering in from below. Eric has the exact name, I just recall the use. It comes in 48' rolls and costs about $7 for a roll. We then roll it with an interior brown acryllic housepaint and flock it.
We'll be at H-con and Fall-In, so maybe we will take up the challenge and run a small tournament on Saturday of those conventions. I'm guessing I could talk Scott Holder into giving up about six tables for H-con. I'll check with him and see what he says. If I can get a go for space, I'll post it here and we can do some planning.

I haven't checked, but I'm sure that it's way too close to the convention date to organize anything for this summer. Next Summer (2011), though, is a possibility.
Joe if you are interested in thinking about Cold Wars 2011 count me in - I am planning to be there all 3 days next year. I would do Fall In but as it runs over Hallowe'en my kids would be really disappointed if I went.

Registering big events like tournaments falls outside the normal registration process. When we did our multi-table event at Cold Wars, for instance, I had to set it up months in advance with the organizers, because we needed a whole room.
Anyway, I'm not opposed to the concept, just saying that it's too late to do it for this Summer.

Having run many tournaments over the years, I checked with Scott Holder - the tournament guru - and was told that there is potentially room to do so on Saturday if we keep it within reason (small) and I can wiggle some room out of my buddy Eric who is running the Flames of War tournament. I should know something definitive within a couple days. Eric is travelling at the moment and due back. Scott has never failed to come through for me either, so potentially I should know something in the next couple days. I'd recommend one Theatre, one support and three rounds of 2.5 hours each - 9 hours total.

Halloween is Sunday of Fall-In - 29-31 Oct. Most folks are out of there early and home before dinner... for Fall-In, I'd recommend a Friday event as Saturday in the tournament area is iffy.

Joe I live in Canada so the 8 hour drive means nothing happens after I am home. Wouldn't Friday conflict with the FOW tournies?
Only the Nationals (for H-con) and we're not running Nationals, nor do I wish to play in it this year. For Fall-In, I'd recommend Friday anyway and we would have the room. The tournaments don't really get into gear in terms of mass volume before Saturday morning. We have enough of what we call First Generation mats for FoW (no roads on them) that we could do about 12-15 tables. Hills or woods aren't too big an issue either. Rivers are about all we'd be lacking and I might have a solution for that as well.
We could make Friday happen for Fall-In, you can leave mid/late Saturday, and still be a hero with the kids.

I would participate in a 15mm event at Fall IN. I would be able to bring 2 other players. I would prefer at least one support choice, 40mm BW and either the Empire, Liberation or the 100 days campaigns. I have played in many I-95 events and would love to play Napoleonics with them.

I'd set something up for both if I can establish that there is sufficient interest. It will just take me a couple days to confirm space for Historicon.

Joe do you sell ice to Inuit for a day job <grin>.... both finances and lack of vacation time in 2010 have stuck me north of the border for the rest of the year I am afraid.
No ice, but I do facilitate leadership development for the Army. I deal in the art of the positive and developing a "vision" of the future. I can "see" a Lasalle tournament at both venues, we just need to build it.

I'm very seriously considering going to Historicon this year. I haven't finalized this yet, and will as soon as I can. I like the idea of having the tourney on a Friday.
I'm working on building a 28mm French army, and it seems like it would be easy to translate it into any period if need be. It will be a real challenge for me to get it done by then to say the least, and would likely aim for adding one support choice as well, but wouldn't complain about just going with the basic list.
And although my commitment isn't finalized, if the space can be reserved, even if the tourney only attracts enough people for a round robin (meaning four), it could be a step in the direction of furthering this rules system.
Absolutely! I have commitment from at least two of my brother-in-arms within I-95 Gamers to play as well. Our collections are in 15mm, so that may be a compatibility problem for 28's. We can probably muster enough figures to support a couple players in 15mm as well.
On a somewhat less related issue, I sent a message to Scott Holder to see if we can do something in the tournament area on Thursday or Friday to alleviate the space problem. Would anyone be averse to playing on Thursday (or Friday)? I'd suggest a 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM event with three rounds.

Yes, if they are all 15mm players it would look weird on the table having a 28mm player, but if the basing is the same, it wouldn't matter technically. However, if its mostly 15mm players, you set the basing according to what works best for the majority of those who can show, and I understand. If folks don't want to have a 28mm player using the same basing, I understand this as well.
I'm of two minds about this.
On one hand, if we throw together something at the last minute, and the Historicon people just squeeze us in to a closet somewhere, it will look bad, confuse people, and give the wrong impression for next time.
On the other hand...
I'll be at Historicon on Friday and Saturday. And I haven't registered a game yet.
So I'm "available"... sort of. BUT... I just don't have the energy or time right now to try to organize a tournament. And - odd as this may seem - I'm not really a tournament player. There are too many things I need to do at the Cons, for me to spend the requisite time in a Tourney. I usually have a lot of bizness to take care of, in various and sundry places.
I'll be happy to show up, say some encouraging things, and answer rules questions. And Who knows... if it's in 15mm I might even come by with an army, to play a game.
If other people want to set it up, and believe that they can do so, then just please make it clear with the organizers that you're not acting on my behalf. (Otherwise people will default to me, and I'll get dozens of emails with questions I can't answer.)

I can't play on Friday or Saturday THIS Historicon since I am already committed to the Field of Glory theme tournament on Friday and the open on Saturday, but if you guys have it on Thursday, starting around noon, I would definitely play in that. Otherwise, the Friday at Fall-In would be a go for me.
Knowing that the I-95 gamers are organizing this, that would be a giant plus for me. Although FoW isn't really my game, I think you guys do an absolutely fantastic job with those tournaments.
BTW - I'm a 15mm, 40mm BW guy too.

I had a message back from Scott Holder last night. He has space in the tournament area for six tables on Saturday. I'll gladly do the coordination and preparations for a tournament. I can get the terrain and the mats. Essentially all I'd need to establish is the Theatre; the supporting brigade numbers (I'd suggest one; and scale (I'd suggest 15mm with 40mm base width). We'd need to establish a scoring system (not too complex - points for a win; points per unit destroyed; points subtracted for units lost; points for taking an objective; points for a decisive win vs a marginal win; etc.), and that's not too difficult. The more info we put out now, the less questions come up on the approach to the event in July.
I'd submit that starting small and gauging the response is a good way to go. For example, our first Flames of War tournament eight years ago was attended by 10 players and now we never have less than 35-40. Starting with a 12 man tournament roster will be fine. Even if folks don't get in to this one, they can stop by and see how it goes, then expand for Fall-In when it goes well.
By the end of the day today, I can generate a perspective event description and start to line up some prize support (I have a few contacts I can see if we can leverage...). I don't see where anything we do doesn't extend the visibility of the game system and generate some fun competition.
Sam, I wouldn't worry about your extent of commitment. As the designer, you can check in, smile, grip/grin, and hand out some prizes at the end of the event. That will allow you to do other things as you require. I've run enough tournaments to be comfortable with the process and the mechanics. I also know I'll have some support from other guys within I-95 Gamers.

Joe - there's no need to declare a Theatre. All armies are compatible across-theatres.
I agree that you should keep the armies small: everybody brings 1 support choice. It might be a good idea, though, to allow players to bring TWO support choices if they have them, and then let them decide which one to use against a given opponent. That offers a bit more fun and variation.
Might as well keep the scoring system the same as in the book for now, and then judge later if something else needs to be invented. It would be simplest to say:
3 pts for a Decisive Victory
2 pts for a Marginal Victory
1 pt for a Draw
I agree that 15mm is probably best, although it would be simplest to just declare Base Widths as the criterion, not figure size. As long as players have base widths between 1.5" and 40mm, that should work.

I'm for declaring base withs, and if I commit, I'm ok with 40mm, and think this will work ok on 4x6.
