   Hi there,

   I apologize for going over covered ground but, after nearly a dozen games, there is still one element of Lasalle that I'm not completely comfortable with.

   I understand that the Commander can control units that fall within his command radius but is it intended that the Commander can essentially form ad hoc groups to command himself? In other words can he select units and employ them as independent units in purpose if not in name?

   An example would be the Commander taking a cavalry unit from a support brigade and employing it on the the opposite flank of the army - far away from the support sub-
   commander's radius but within his (the Commander's) own?

   From what I've gleaned from the forum posts I believe this is the intention and I have no disagreement with it but I would really like to hear a final clarification!

   The way I play it is that in the deployment phase the sub commanders forces should be deployed all within 6BW of their subcommander ....the Commander in Chief is placed last and then later on in the game if he wants to form adhoc groups fair enough but using the "I'm with Stupid rule" ie 4 BW.

   Surely anybody forming a mixed unit at the start of the game with the Commander is a bit cheesey and should be discouraged!....I also think that the Commander should also be deployed in the centre of the army initially.

   Whats Sam think about this?

   Hi,

   I know you guys have much more experience with wargaming then I have, but I believe Eugene's interpretation is reasonable.

   I am looking at it from the perspective of my recent Hougoumont scenario. Jerome is the commander, as troops are added to the fray it seems reasonable that he can tell Soye as he arrives with his 6 battalions that he leave 3 battalions with Jerome to assist with his southern assault and he advance with the other 3 battalions north to try to flank the allies.

   I suppose this a more narrative interpretation rather than technical, but it does sit more comfortably with me.

   I will of course defer to those with more experience than me,

   The "I'm With Stupid" rule was more of an attempt to place limits upon players who wanted to abuse the existing rules (like sending a bad officer into a swamp, out of the way), rather than trying to reflect any specific historical thing.

   Personally, I feel that divisional commanders got their hands pretty dirty in battles, and often did muck around with things like the formations of battalions, the placement of skirmish lines, batteries, etc. So I'm comfortable with the commander in a Lasalle game forming his own little "kampfgruppe," for lack of a better word.

   The older I get, the more I realize how flexible these units and formations were, and that officers could detach and attach and send them off in all sorts of special ways. Indeed, Lasalle probably isn't flexible enough, given the ways in which commanders in small actions routinely picked-apart battalions, to send these companies over here, and those companies over there, with a section of guns and one howitzer, etc, etc etc.

   My thanks to Paul and John for your comments and to Sam for clearing this up. This knowledge will make my controlling of linear tactics armies a little easier!
