Has anyone got any suggestions for creating nice town bases?
Any ideas or pictures would be gratfully accepted.

I would use miniature houses slightly out of scale, eg. use 6mm houses (1:300) with 15mm miniatures, to get proportions more or less right. As we are modelling whole brigades with around 25 miniatures, I think houses etc. to scale looks awfully big on the battlefield.

Timecast specialise in this, I think - and apparently often put up small villages on e-bay

Ebay is pretty good, in general, for 6mm buildings.
IMO it looks best when you have irregular bases or none at all for your towns/villages. For practicality though it may be better to stick to squares/rectangles.
PS add a few trees and outlining walls hedges. This makes it look much nicer and complete.

I go with Blucher, just place the houses (15 or 28 mm) for 28 mm figures and some how demarcate an area that is equal to the rule set definition of a town base. Looks much better.

Hi
I am using home-made Built Up Areas designed for Napoleon's Battles
You can see the method I used (no too original!) atThe buildings are undersized as Esbenmf proposed above

Are yes. It was the actual bases that the houses sit on I was having trouble with.
First I couldn't work out what to put on them. Should it be paving or gravel or grass. Fences etc. (We don't have European villages were I live.) Thanks to everyone for helping with solving that problem. Especialy your link Rafa! Did you down load the paving or paint it on?
The other trick is working out what to make the base from. Cardboard tends to warp when painted over large areas.
Thanks everyone.Posted 1 year ago # -
Hello Max, I made some town bases out of a very cheap and durable material: placemats! I cut them to the recommended size (4 BW square). The placemats I used are made of a tough vinyl surface, backed by a very thin, soft foam surface. In making the town bases, I used the soft (bottom) surface as the top. Using a straightedge and a sharp pencil, I drew a border and the internal cobblestone pattern. Painting, washing, and drybrushing followed, with some brown stains and some flocking to represent some grass growing between the cobbles.
I was inspired by the pictures of the town base in the rulebook. The buildings can be moved around or removed as troops occupy the town base. The benefit of these bases is that they are very tough, do not warp, and in my estimation, look very good. I supposed if you wanted to make some grassy areas on the town base, you could delineate a section to be completely covered by grass.
Cheers!

Fantastic idea Genl Brady! This saturday I'll give it a try. Disapointed I can't see the pictures you included.

Sorry about the pictures; I posted them on the M&R Yahoo Group, but I must have done something wrong in trying to put the image source into my post. I'll try to work out the bugs.

I'm sorry; the M&R (Might & Reason) Yahoo Group.

Sam did such an awesome job with Might and Reason, my group and I played the SYW campaign TWICE. So we knew Lasalle was going to be a hit. Anyway, check out the group, if only to see the pictures of armies. I also have pictures there under the album "15mm M&R in San Diego".
