Hi Guys any of you UK lads going to Triples next Saturday or Sunday come on over to the "Chosen Men" demo...the Hougoumont display will be on and nodoubt we will have plenty of time to chat about all things Napoleonic and new ways to play Lasalle:)

Saw this game at Triples, a week ago now, a very nice Hovels model of Hougomont as the centre piece, Which encouraged me to purchase one. However the actual game was very disappointing.
I expected to see something close to a historical Order of battle as there seems to have been all the correct information handed over in another thread. I.E. the right battalions on the table correctly flagged and painted for such an event. Sadly This was not the case and it had the appearance of a piecemeal affair.
To me it had the appearance of a collection of ad hoc figures drawn from other theatres of operation put on a table to make up the numbers. The French had long since replaced the 1804 pattern flags being just one example.
I am sorry to have been negative about this as the rules themselves are excellent, but a demonstration game needs to be presented correctly especially if its such a well known subject.
:)nice one David:) and well spotted, The hougomont demo is not really about putting the correct flags on the actual units that fought around Hougomont....its all about promoting the Hougomont project and using the Lasalle rules for Napoleonic Battles...our board is primarily used for gaming as we use it for quite a few Battles and periods its not really our aim to try and represent each unit with their correct flags that battled around Hougomont. we also talked through the turn sequence and showed people the actual game mechanics....everybody seemed suitably impressed:)
Trying to actually fight the action trying to get in to Hougomont is practically a none starter as the scales are not really correct....what impressed me was the feedback over playing with 15mm Napoleonics and the Lasalle ruleset:)

If this is the case then surely it is best not to advertise as a demonstration of Hougomont,a recognised aspect of Waterloo, where people who have a passion for the period expect to see good minatures, all in the correct uniforms etc.
Not wanting to offend, but it would have been far better to advertise as a demonstration of Napoleonic gaming using the Lasalle rules. Something that it actually was, rather than something it most definately was not, at such a prestigious event in the wargaming calendar.

I also went to the Triple and saw this didnt mention it at the time but the centre piece of Hougomont the garden the Flowers that are in it were not in bloom for that time of year

@Dave....did you come and have a chat? ....loads of people came by and talked about Lasalle and the Hougoumont project...which Club are you from as I asked most who came along?....I also hope you put in a few coins for the Help the Heroes collection:)and picked up a bun:)

Sorry you dont like the truth pointed out and have taken umberage. I can live with that, and yes we did speak at Triples. There were a few of us that came over to see the demo.
I agree wargaming is all about fun there is no point in it being a game if its not fun, but a historical refight does differ, the point being if you are doing a refight you use the right troops and try to change the outcome.

It is doubtful that I would post pictures on this forum of my work, as I have my figures painted by an overseas company and therefore it would not be my work.

You may not want to have upset them but to knock the hard work they have put in is unfair. Yes we could all see the flags may not have been right a blind man would spot that issue.The thing is at least they entered into the spirit of the period and put on a good display.

@David ...I have not in the slightest way taken umberage:) but I do think you have missed the point....it was not a refight of Hougoumont it was to show wargamers the merits of Lasalle...that is why we fought most of the action away from Hougomont to show people the dynamics of the game, also away to promote the Hougoumont Project and Help for Heroes...
Try and stop being so negative or at least put on a demo of your own...learn to meet people and express your views in a constructive way and above all try not to take it so seriously, lifes about having a bit of fun, at the Triples we met lots of people who certainly see it that way ....its a shame David that you have only been on the forum for a few posts and seem to made yourself look like a complete banana:)
Now stop being a plonker and the next time we put on the demo come on over for a chat about the good things Napoleonic wargaming has to offer:)...oh and by the way my army was painted by myself for the 1804 Conquest period, the Hougoumont Project came about after the army was completed and I did not fancy changing it for the Hundred days campaign.I suppose it might have pleased a small minority like yourself but I have for too many other painting projects on the go.

I too saw the demo. Very impressed by it, as no doubt about it a lot of work went into it. It looked good to me.
I am trying to get into Napoleonics and I think Daves comments show that it is one of the last great bastions of wargaming beardiness. After reading his comments, it does make me think why wargaming can be so snoby and is making me think is it really worth it?
All that hard work and you get someone telling you your flags are wrong...
I know I would have more pride and satisfaction in my models if I had painted them myself rather than take the easy option and throw money at them and get someone else to paint them - Flags being right or not.

Rather a nasty, snide comment there Dave. I saw the game and thought it was a good display that showed the rules off very well and attracted a lot of attention for Help the Heroes as well. There may well have been a couple of inaccuracies, but nothing that detracted from the setup at all.
Constructive criticism is always welcome, but to be so critical as to say that the display should not have been put on, is seriously bad form. The conclusion I must draw is that you must be suffering envy because you have nit put on a display yourself. Nor are you prepared to post any photos because of the figures not being your own work. A very poor excuse, seeing as you could apply a credit to the painter. A demonstration is not a refight. It is just a demonstration of what happened. For such a thing, it is not so important that the flags are correct, though it would be nice to see. You need to know what the difference is between a demonstration and a re-enactment! It was not a re-enactment and that is the difference. Had it been a re-enactment, then the correct flags would have been important, as would the correct state of the flowerbeds, as Neville has mentioned! A demonstration only requires representational figures, but a re-enactment requires accurate detail.
Hi Lads....I think Dave or whoever he his as probably got some sort of problem ...its a shame that he says he as a passion for the period and than spoils himself with stupid remarks....people like him do not really help promote wargaming at all, and how can you get newcomers to the game with remarks like his....anyway lets move on I think he's been rumbled:) ....I had a good time at Triples met plenty of like minded individuals had a few too many pints....at the next show I hope Mysterious Dave comes along,I'll certainly buy him a pint as its comedians like him that give me the motivation to promote our ever growing hobby!

Well done on the tables above. Wargaming is first and foremost about gaming and having fun and you did both from what I read. I wish LaSalle would pick up here in the USA Midwest more. Too many people entrenched with Nappies Battles here to make the change.
Hi KFoo ...me and Nev started playing Lasalle as soon as it was published...and its the first time that both of us actually started our armies for a ruleset that we had not even seen....only the brief on the website:)...a massive bonus for us that the game is very good:)...the uk is a lot smaller place than the USA so its probably easier to promote new game sytems....so doing demos is a good way to reach new players:)
Try and involve a wargaming partner and then play the game as much as you can to show the merits of the system, more will then follow....I think the hardest part is getting newcomers to paint up a new Napoleonic army ....

I dont use any pseudonym I post with my name, I possibly do have a problem as I believe accuracy is very important when portraying history, so people can identify correct units etc, but this is probably my fault. I was not trying to cause offence with my comments, I just felt that although the demonstration of lasalle was good for me the accuracy of the units would have really improved it. As to bringing new blood to the hobby I accept my biased opinions do not help and possibly deter, but also the point you make about painting a new army for the period is also a huge barrier for a lot of people too.

I am struggling with this Dave as you say. Its a fair ammount of figures to get an army together, and the more I do, the more I realise that Naps are a labour of love. Its definately not like painting gauls!
Hi Dave...are you a member of a club? and what part of the UK are you from? are you a local lad (Sheffield)....I'll bet your a solitary wargamer....next year I have a feeling plenty of Borodino fights will be doing the rounds at UK conventions....why don't you join one of them...your also more than welcome to bring along some of your mini's to join in the Hougoumont lasalle demo as well:) also what army do you field? as Alex says post a few pics on the forum ...it does not matter that you send your mini's overseas to have them painted...I like to see any sort of miniature on the forum:)
its also quite strange that you knew that Nev was running the Brits at Hougoumont....me and Nev never greet the the public with a Hi I'm Nev and I'm Paul...we just say hello with a smile:)

I game at a club called Aftermath in Norwich, we always travel across to Triples each year, much nicer now it is not in the middle of the City. I prefer the early period of Napoleonics, so battles of Austerlitz, Jena and Friedland and that period in general are more to my taste. I have been collecting figures for over 40 years now at 25mm scale and we started to play Lasalle last year when the rule book was released. We decided not to rebase our figures though as we have used a 1:20 ratio for many years and still use other rules to play the big battles.
James, The painting a new army note was made by Paulus earlier in the thread and I happend to agree with that point, as you have to be committed to the period to start painting them, or as in my case getting them painted as a basic army does require a fair amount of lead depending on the rules and choosen army.
