Maybe this can sound like a heresy but... Is there some problem to using units with a number of bases different from 4 or 6?. I am a solo play so I don't play tournement-type games with well balanced armies, but 'historical' scenarios.

If you're playing solo, then you know who's the big dog and who is just average. Just remember that 4 stand unit has 4D6 shooting/8D6 fighting and the larger units have 6D6 shooting/12D6 fighting. Four disr to kill 4-stand units , 6 disr to kill 6 stand units. Long as you keep to these standards then you're golden. : )

Evidently, I'll throw dice as per base number of the unit. I expect that small untis will fire/fight almost inefficiently and they will be very brittle, but I am curious about it.
